Buonasera a tutti!
I’m writing you this from my host family house here in SORRENTO! I have been going out far too much recently so I’ve decided to stay at home and study a bit of Italian grammar, il presente semplice! (The present tense)….The host family are great… a mum, a dad and two teenage kids. The house is so clean and the parents cook like a dream!
I have never felt like that they host students for a job, it feels more like they do it because they really like people and want to meet as many different cultures as possible. Italians are really good at making people feel at home and their natural hospitality means that even if you are far away from home, you never feel lonely and if you feel homesick they often take you under their wing. They always ask me what I’m studying and of course, staying with a host family is an excellent way to back up what you have learnt in the classroom.
Tomorrow evening I’m going out with few other students to a concert in the St. Francesco Cloister, this is right next to my school and in front of it is one of the most amazing views in the world. (Sorrento has just so many amazing views!) The school provided us with all the information we needed about the concert, and we went and booked the tickets ourselves! What an achievement, we managed to communicate with the booking office without the aid of a guidebook or an Italian teacher!
And that is the difference, this course teaches you how to speak in real life situations and the teachers are all experts in communication. There is nothing dry about the lessons at all. Being here in Sorrento, using the language that I learn in class, every day in the street and with my Italian host family, I really learn new vocabulary every day and can insert it into my everyday living experience and see that learning a language is not in fact an alien or super difficult process that is beyond me!
The beauty of speaking Italian here is that you can instantly check if real Italians understand you and if they usually DO!!… so it really means you are speaking their language!
I’ll let you know how the concert goes… and buona notte a tutti!
This means:
Goodnight Everyone!

Lisa… this is how I felt while studying in Barcelona!
Being able to practice with the locals makes ALL the difference… I laughed a lot… with them, and at myself, but it was all a lot of fun!
I enjoyed going to concerts, it was always a good chance to enjoy music in another language, and a way for me to practice my language skills!
The school really is in an awesome location, isn’t it? The pictures look great!
A più tardi!
I remember the amazing food at some restaurants I have eaten at in Genoa a couple years ago, but the food with your Italian host family must be amazing! To add to it, Sorrento looks like such a beautiful city too!
