The City of Bridges (and its musical nightlife!)

I would really like to tell you something about the not so well known side of Porto, just waiting to be discovered – the nightlife you can enjoy in this amazing city, whatever your taste!

Of course, Porto is well known as Portugal’s second largest city and the ‘capital of the north’, home to a historical centre, recognised by UNESCO as a ‘World Heritage Site’. It also contains several impressive bridges that cross the river Douro, taking you from the city centre to the world famous wine caves. Each bridge has an impressive unique architecture that makes them stand out and give Porto a unique landscape. In Porto you must take the opportunity to travel in one of the traditional barca boats and see a different side of this fascinating city!

But this is common knowledge for every tourist. I want to tell you about the sometimes overlooked but truly fantastic nightlife!!

In Porto you can start your night in a typical restaurant enjoying the local cuisine (the yummy francesinha for example!) and sharing a jar full of the local red wine. From there Porto can cater to any of your tastes in nightlife, from the serene cafes and chill-out bars to all types of clubs – Drum & Bass, Rock, Hip-Hop, Reggae, House and much more!

One evening that I totally advise you to do is experience an electronic dance party in the beautiful Teatro Sa da Bandeira! This beautiful and historic (opening in 1877) Theatre is transformed into a hedonistic dance party, featuring famous DJs and unforgettable nights!

For those that may feel put off by the hectic, hedonistic side to Porto then you will be pleased to know that it also has an excellent array of theatres, museums and cultural spots to keep you happy for many weeks on a Portuguese language course!

You have the opportunity to see Classical, Jazz or world music concerts at the “intriguing, disquieting and dynamic” building of the Casa de Musica, winning a European Award from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), not only does it offer something for everybody every single week, but it also adds to the fascinating array of architecture in Porto!

And finally, the biggest party of the year in Porto is called São João – a night-long street party to never forget, suitable for people of all ages and backgrounds! No matter what your interests and tastes, you will not fail to have an amazing and unforgettable experience in Porto!
