US citizens travelling to Cuba:

US citizens can enter Cuba on a ‘Tourist Card’. This card is valid for 28 days and can be renewed for a further 28 whilst in Cuba. The ‘Tourist Card’ is stamped when you enter Cuba, not your passport, though you must take your passport with you. The ‘Tourist Card’ costs approximately 40 US dollars and is available outside the US from all airlines flying to Cuba, as well as from Cuban Consulates.

Unfortunately US national airlines do not fly to Cuba, due to the US embargo on Cuba.

To reach Cuba from the USA, it is necessary to fly via Mexico, the Bahamas, or another country and onwards to Cuba, collecting your ‘Tourist Card’ before boarding your connecting flight to Cuba.

Most airlines which fly to Cuba from outside the US provide Tourist Cards, normally collected at the airport, before you board your plane.

Approximately 100,000 US citizens are estimated to have travelled to Cuba on Tourist Cards in 2005.

However, though Cuba is pleased to welcome US citizens on Tourist Cards, the US Treasury still prohibits US citizens from spending money in Cuba or on spending money to travel to Cuba. Full details can be found on the US Treasury website:

Naturally, these restrictions do not apply to US citizens travelling to Spain, Argentina, The Dominican Republic, or most other countries, to attend a Spanish or Spanish and Dance course.
