Learn Spanish in Playa del Carmen, Mexico
Learn Spanish in a Caribbean paradise at our school in Playa Del Carmen! On the Riviera Maya and home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico, there are plenty of opportunities for aquatic adventures! In fact, ‘Playa’ is famous for being one of the best locations in the world for scuba diving! The city has managed to escape many of the trappings of mass tourism and, as such, continues to offer visitors an authentic ‘Mexican’ experience!
Originally a small fishing village, Playa Del Carmen has evolved to become the most exciting city on the Yucatán Peninsula! Its famous pedestrianised avenue, ‘La Quinta’ offers arguably some of the best shopping in Mexico and the nightlife is incredible! The city is easily navigable, with most points of interest located within walking distance of one another.
Our school in Playa Del Carmen
A mere 6 blocks from the white sand and turquoise waters that make Playa del Carmen such a popular Caribbean retreat, our school is ideally located to allow you to make the most of your time here.
You will learn Spanish in one of 10 open-air classrooms with charming thatched roofs, surrounded by the school’s own tropical gardens. Each classroom caters for a maximum of 7 students and their design really does create a very relaxing, peaceful atmosphere.
During breaks, you can grab a traditional Mexican snack at the school’s cafeteria or challenge your fellow students to a game of volleyball on the school’s own court!
Learning Spanish with a group of international students of your level is often the most fun and engaging option, as you can practice speaking Spanish with each other, as well as begin to form friendships! Our school in Playa del Carmen offers three group courses: the ‘Semi-Intensive’ course of 15 group lessons per week; the ‘Intensive’ course of 20 group lessons per week; and the ‘Super-Intensive’ course of 25 group lessons. Class sizes are kept small with a maximum of 4 students per class (except during high season where the groups do tend to reach the maximum of 8 students per class).
These are total immersion courses and so are taught in Spanish from day one. Although there is an emphasis on the everyday, practical usage of the language which, therefore, does mean that there will be lots of speaking and listening, you will cover all 4 skills (i.e. reading, writing, speaking and listening) and so these courses are the perfect choice if you wish to improve your overall level!
You may also like to consider adding some salsa or cooking lessons to your course, as these are not only fun complementary courses but will also be taught in Spanish and so are of linguistic benefit too!
If you do need to concentrate on a certain aspect of the language, or are not able to commit to lessons everyday (from Monday to Friday) then private lessons may be the best choice for you. This option is really flexible and should allow you to negotiate the content and schedule of your lessons with your teacher.
Make your stay unforgettable by living with a host family! At a maximum of just 20 minutes’ walk from the school, this is also a really convenient accommodation option, and will also allow you to practice your Spanish on an everyday basis with native speakers.
Alternatively, the school also offers residence accommodation, which is the option to choose if you would prefer to stay with other students from the school. The school actually has two residences both located just 10 minutes’ walk from the school and 15 minutes’ walk from the beach.
The first residence is a beautiful Caribbean style house with 10 large rooms, all fitted with air-conditioning and a private bathroom. There is a large shared kitchen where you can prepare your meals and a comfortable living room and dining area, which is a great place to socialise with your housemates! A buffet-style breakfast is served on the terrace each morning and the residence is surrounded by a beautiful garden. As well as all this, the residence has its own swimming pool and offers wireless Internet throughout.
The second residence was originally a small hotel and also has 10 rooms, all offering air-conditioning, cable TV and a private bathroom. There is also a cafeteria where continental breakfast is served every day.
There is certainly plenty to see and do in Playa del Carmen and our school offers a lively activities programme to help you make the most of this! Activities are all completely optional and may incur a small additional charge to cover costs. Please note that the school may require a minimum number of participants to run the advertised activities.
If there is anything that you would like to do that is not on the activities programme whilst you are in Playa del Carmen, please do not hesitate to speak with the school’s friendly staff, who will be pleased to provide you with the information to allow you to arrange this yourself. When you arrive at the school, our colleagues will let you know what they are offering, but you can also visit the school’s reception at any point for further information on activities.
Just to give you an idea, some activities that the school have previously offered include visits to the ancient Mayan centre at Chichen-Itza, visits to natural parks to see endangered species and trips to Cancun.
Apart from the school’s activities, the area also offers visitors the opportunity to scuba dive, snorkel, kiteboard, skydive and windsurf amongst many, many others!
How to get there
Cancun International Airport is approximately 40-45 minutes’ drive from Playa del Carmen. You can take a bus from the airport to Playa del Carmen (journey time is approximately 65 minutes). Alternatively, we are also able to arrange airport transfers if required. Please note that these are not included in the course price.
Playa del Carmen - visiting the school
I recently visited our school in Playa del Carmen and happy to report that it really is located in a very special setting, just 10 minutes walking distance away from the beautiful white sand beach and Quinta Avenida, the town’s main street. The streets in Playa del Carmen are clearly marked and most of the shops, nightlife and the school are located in a small area, it is very easy to find your way around the town.
The school itself is set in its own self-contained grounds with tropical gardens, a cafeteria where you can buy drinks and snacks, a volleyball court and hammocks where you can relax after class! Each classroom is situated in a sheltered outdoor cabana, overlooking the gardens, so you can enjoy the fantastic Mexican weather even when you are in lessons!
