Playa del Carmen – Learning Spanish in Paradise!

Look no further than Playa del Carmen, Mexico (or “Playa,” as the locals call it) in deciding where to take your Spanish language course abroad! I couldn’t have dreamed of a better experience than one immersed in the language, culture, and adventure in the magnificent Riviera Maya. I just returned from my Spanish course at the school in Playa, and words are not enough to describe the splendor of this place – you must live the experience yourself!

Playa’s excellent location also offers a wide variety of one-day trips around the region — including Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Cancun, the Mayan ruins at Tulum or Coba, the ecological water parks Xcaret and Xel-ha, and Hidden Worlds Cenote Park, which gives you the unique opportunity to do some swimming, diving, and exploring one of the largest collections of freshwater, underground caves in the area! If it is adventure that you seek, you are sure to find it in and around Playa.

It was easy to explore this fantastic tropical location, as my Spanish classes were in the morning, leaving my afternoons wide open. The school is just steps away from a pedestrian walkway, locally referred to as “La Quinta”, where you can find tons of shops, restaurants, and bars to discover with your friends from the school. I spent many afternoons practicing my Spanish by bartering with the animated merchants along La Quinta. While I bought gifts for friends and family back home, it was also fun just to look around and admire the creations of these skilled artists and craftsmen: intricate stone and wood-carvings, ceramics, hand-woven hammocks, and many other “recuerdos” (souvenirs) of this comfortable and casual Mexican city.

As I walked by the restaurants and cafés, the rhythmic Mariachi music and tropical breeze on my skin made me want to stay forever! What’s better – Playa has much more of a serene and tranquil atmosphere than its touristy neighbor to the north: Cancun. Pretty much everything around town is within walking distance, especially the beach, which is only 5 minutes from the school. After class, I relaxed on the alabaster-white sand beaches, periodically going for a swim in the warm, turquoise, crystal clear Caribbean waters. The seaside bars are perfect for enjoying a tropical fruit drink, some tacos or seafood empanadas, and even kicking back to watch some live music.

What made my trip even better was the school in Playa, which has its own swimming pool, hammocks to lounge in, a convenient student café, and even a private student residence with air-conditioned rooms. I couldn’t be happier that I chose to study Spanish in Playa, as it truly was an unforgettable, fun learning experience. The progress I made in Spanish, as well as the memories and friendships I made in Playa, will last forever!
