\"1st<\/a>Italian is a very rich language, full of idioms and proverbs that are commonly used in everyday conversations. If you are learning Italian, want to sound like a native speaker and want to understand Italians when they speak, you should really make an effort and try to learn at least some Italian idioms. Taking an Italian language course<\/a> where the language is spoken will definitely help!<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

If you consider the individual words that make up sayings and idioms then they don\u2019t really make any sense, that\u2019s why trying to translate them word for word into another language can be a very funny exercise!<\/p>\n

Here are some examples of common Italian expressions with their literally translations in English, their meanings and their possible English idiomatic equivalents. Let us know if you can think of more, or better alternatives!<\/p>\n

Non vedo l\u2019ora!\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>(I don\u2019t see the hour)
\n<\/em>Meaning: I am excited\/I really want to do something.
\nEnglish equivalent: I can\u2019t wait!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"ItalyIdioms\"<\/a>In bocca al lupo!<\/strong><\/span> (in to the mouth of the wolf<\/em>)
\nMeaning: good luck! The appropriate response would be \u201ccrepi!<\/strong>\u201d (may the wolf die!).
\n<\/em>English equivalent: Break a leg!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Fa un freddo cane!<\/strong><\/span> (it\u2019s dog cold!)
\n<\/em>Meaning: it is really really cold.
\nEnglish equivalent: It\u2019s brass monkeys<\/em><\/strong>\u2026 short for the colloquial expression \u2018cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey<\/em>\u2019 for an explanation of this rude saying visit Wikipedia: http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brass_monkey_(colloquialism)<\/a><\/p>\n

Costare un occhio della testa<\/strong><\/span> (to cost an eye of the head<\/em>)
\nMeaning: to be very expensive.
\nEnglish equivalent: To cost an arm and a leg<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"ItalyIdioms4\"<\/a>Ogni morte di Papa <\/strong><\/span>(every death of a Pope)
\n<\/em>Meaning: very rarely.
\nEnglish equivalent: Once in a blue moon<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Essere in gamba<\/strong><\/span> (to be in leg)
\n<\/em>Meaning: if you say that someone is \u201cin leg\u201d you are saying that he\/she is very capable, clever, competent.
\nEnglish equivalent: A bright spark<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Acqua in bocca!<\/strong><\/span> (water in the mouth!)
\n<\/em>Meaning: don\u2019t tell anyone\/it\u2019s a secret\/keep quiet.
\nEnglish equivalent: Mum\u2019s the word<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Avere gli occhi foderati di prosciutto<\/strong>\/avere le fette di salame sugli occhi<\/strong><\/span> (to have your eyes wrapped in ham\/to have salami slices on your eyes)
\n<\/em>Meaning: to miss the obvious; to be too blind to see the obvious.
\nEnglish equivalent: \u00a0Looking through rose-tinted glasses<\/em><\/strong> means to see only the good things, not the bad. <\/em>Pulling the wool over their eyes\u2026 <\/em><\/strong>is also possible, but used more for when someone is being misled!<\/p>\n

Perdere le staffe <\/strong><\/span>(to lose the stirrups)
\n<\/em>Meaning: to lose self-control and get very angry.
\nEnglish equivalent: To fly off the handle<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Sudare sette camicie<\/strong><\/span> (to sweat seven shirts)
\n<\/em>Meaning: to work extremely hard; to make extraordinary efforts to obtain something.
\nEnglish equivalent: Slog your guts out<\/em><\/strong>\u2026 or to Work like a dog.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Non avere peli sulla lingua<\/strong><\/span> (not to have hairs on the tongue<\/em>)
\nMeaning: to be straightforward; to say what you mean directly without worring about what someone might think and even if you upset people.
\nEnglish equivalent: not to mince one\u2019s word<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"ItalyIdioms5\"<\/a><\/strong><\/span>Questa me la lego al dito!<\/strong><\/span> (I will tie this to my finger!<\/em>)
\nMeaning: If you say that you will tie something to your finger that has offended or hurt you, it means that you will not forget about it and you will probably hold it against the person who has hurt you and\/or you will take revenge!
\nEnglish equivalent: We are not sure of the best equivalent to this. In English there are a lot of sayings related to bearing a grudge<\/em><\/strong> or getting revenge. Revenge is a dish best served cold<\/em> is an interesting saying, which is more about unexpected vengeance rather than remembering someone who has hurt you.<\/p>\n

\u00c8 acqua passata!<\/strong><\/span> (it\u2019s past water!)
\n<\/em>Meaning: something belongs to the past and is not important or disturbing anymore.
\nEnglish equivalent: Water under the bridge<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Passare la notte in bianco<\/strong><\/span> (to pass the night in white)
\n<\/em>Meaning: to have a sleepless night.
\nEnglish equivalent: to not sleep a wink <\/em><\/strong>or to toss and turn<\/em><\/strong> in the night!<\/p>\n
