This medieval port town also has an interesting cultural and historic background, with Catalan origins.<\/p>\n<p>It is a great location for food and nature lovers, and a beautiful setting for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.applelanguages.com\/en\/learn\/italian\/italy\/alghero.php\">studying Italian<\/a>! Alghero truly comes to life during the summer months.<\/p>\n<p>There are so many reasons why you should visit Alghero, here are my top five&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>1. Nature<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"pic-box alignleft size-full wp-image-3173\" src=\"https:\/\/www.applelanguages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/AlgheroPortandYacht.jpg\" alt=\"AlgheroPortandYacht\" width=\"250\" height=\"188\" \/>Alghero is a paradise for all you nature lovers! Take a boat excursion to go dolphin watching, or go snorkelling to see amazing multi-coloured fish. Alghero is also a scuba diving hotspot, known for its underwater caves.<\/p>\n<p>If you prefer to stay on dry land, drive up to the headland of Capo Caccia and descend the dramatic cliff steps to Neptune\u2019s Grotto. There\u2019s also the opportunity to go on jeep safaris to spot the magnificent griffon vultures.<\/p>\n<p>Travel further afield to some of Sardinia\u2019s natural springs, or go to some of the lagoons and wetlands where you\u2019ll find pink flamingos. Finally, take a boat trip to the uninhabited Asinara national park to see an array of diverse and rare wildlife, including the white donkey!<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"pic-box size-full wp-image-3177 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.applelanguages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/algherobeach.jpg\" alt=\"White sand beach in Alghero\" width=\"250\" height=\"188\" \/>2. Beaches<\/h3>\n<p>There are so many beaches in and near Alghero, all with white sands and clear emerald waters. You\u2019ll be spoilt for choice! As well as relaxing, you can also try out some water sports. The most famous beach is La Pelosa in Stintino, a short journey north of Alghero.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Entertainment<\/h3>\n<p>During the summer evenings, Alghero really comes to life! After dining al fresco, go for an evening\u00a0 walk along the promenade and around the little alleyways of the old town. The streets are filled with artists and musicians, and there are also many concerts around town and on the beach.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re there for Ferragosto, in mid-August, watch the magnificent firework display by the port and dance into the early hours on the beach. There are also many other celebrations throughout the year, from Gay Pride, to the Bogamari sea urchin festival and various religious processions.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"pic-box aligncenter size-full wp-image-3179\" src=\"https:\/\/www.applelanguages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/AlgheroNight-1.jpg\" alt=\"Alghero at night\" width=\"500\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.applelanguages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/AlgheroNight-1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.applelanguages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/AlgheroNight-1-300x113.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>4. Cuisine<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"pic-box size-full wp-image-3171 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.applelanguages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/AlgheroFood.jpg\" alt=\"Seafood in Alghero\" width=\"250\" height=\"188\" \/>If you\u2019re a foodie, Alghero is the place to be! It has the typical Italian pizzas, pasta and gelato, but there are also many regional specialities. On every restaurant table, you\u2019ll find <em>carasau<\/em> the local thin and crisp flatbread. It is ideal for an aperitivo with the local pecorino cheese and a glass of wine.\u00a0 You should also try <em>fain\u00e8<\/em>, a giant chickpea pancake. Great for a cheap snack.<\/p>\n<p>The seafood here is amazing. Try <em>bottarga<\/em>, salted, pressed and dried fish roe. It sounds odd but tastes delicious with pasta! <em>Riccio di mare<\/em>, sea urchin, is also great with spaghetti! You should also go to the countryside to an <em>agriturismo<\/em> (a farm which has opened up its own restaurant and accommodation on site).<\/p>\n<p>The best farm restaurants are family businesses, serving an elaborate array of traditional cuisine (sometimes 15 different dishes in one sitting!) made solely from produce from the land. Here you\u2019ll also find the famous <em>maialino da latte<\/em>, suckling pig, which is roasted whole on an open fire.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"pic-box alignleft size-full wp-image-3180\" src=\"https:\/\/www.applelanguages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Alghero-seadas.jpg\" alt=\"seadas in Alghero\" width=\"250\" height=\"188\" \/>For dessert, you have to try a <em>seada<\/em>. This fried pastry filled with pecorino cheese and covered in honey is divine! You\u2019ll also have to try the local <em>torrone<\/em>, nougat to us.<\/p>\n<p>If you go out with the locals, you\u2019ll no doubt finish the meal with a shot of mirto. This local liquor is made from the myrtle plant and drank as a digestif.<\/p>\n<p>After dinner you should then go to one of the many beach bars, where you can\u00a0try Ichnusa, a Sardinian beer. The lemon version is definitely my favourite!<\/p>\n<p><em>A\u00a0Seada recipe (and credit to the image above) can be found on this <a href=\"http:\/\/manimpasta.blogspot.co.uk\/2010\/12\/dolci-tradizionali-seadas.html\">blog<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>5. People<\/h3>\n<p>The locals are friendly and generous, and really laid-back! It\u2019s very easy to make friends as they\u2019re very open and chatty people. It\u2019s also a great place to learn Italian because few people speak English, even the majority of tourists are Italian!
