\"\"Today, the 6th June, is the UN\u2019s Russian Language Day<\/strong>! This day was created in 2010 by UNESCO to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity within the United Nations\u2019 member states.<\/p>\n

The UN Language Days serve to promote the equal use of all six official languages.<\/p>\n

We mentioned French language day<\/a> in a previous post from March, but the special focus today is on the Russian language!<\/p>\n

\"AlexanderWhy do we celebrate the Russian language on 6th June? The main reason is that 6th June is the birthday of Aleksandr Pushkin!<\/p>\n

Pushkin was a poet, widely considered to be the father of modern Russian literature. He was also a somewhat controversial figure. Exiled by Tsar Alexander I in 1820, partly for the political unrest he was causing at home, Pushkin went on to join a secret society partially responsible for triggering the Greek Revolution in 1821! Pushkin also grew up speaking French, raised in the company of French household staff.<\/p>\n

Pushkin’s poetry<\/h4>\n

The first of Pushkin’s poems was published in Russian when he was just 15 years old. His experimental writing style gained him great renown in the literature scene. With a commitment to radical social reform, his highly politicised poetry also made him notorious in the eyes of the nobility.<\/p>\n

Pushkin\u2019s highly nuanced style heavily influenced later Russian literature. Russian vocabulary had numerous vocabulary gaps which Pushkin filled with calques of his own creation. Many of these derived from his native French. The rhythm of both his poetry and his prose \u2013 unique and quite contentious at the time \u2013 went on to form the basis of modern poetic Russian. Pushkin\u2019s active career inspired the works of authors such as Leskov, Yesenin, and Gorky. His characteristic way with words has even been said to influence the work of Leo Tolstoy. Such a man is the perfect icon for a day commemorating the most-used native language in Europe.<\/p>\n

Quick fact:<\/strong> Not just an important language on Earth – astronauts on the international space station learn Russian in order to be able to communicate with Mission Control!<\/em><\/p>\n

Russian is a first language for over 150 million people, and an official language in Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan. The influence of the former Soviet Union means that Russian is also an important secondary language in several other countries. The total amount of fluent Russian speakers in the world is more than 265 million people.<\/p>\n

Learning Russian abroad<\/h3>\n
