French Club 50+ courses, Bordeaux

Bordeaux is one of France’s most exciting and vibrant cities. Often known as “Little Paris”, the city is the largest in France in terms of area and also one of the largest in Europe! Half of the city has been declared a World Heritage site by Unesco and many wonderful historic monuments stand next to striking new, world-class buildings. This creates an outstanding and impressive backdrop for studying French!

Join our French Club 50+ course in Bordeaux for a relaxed holiday, in a lively and dynamic cosmopolitan city. Tour the local vineyards and taste world-famous wines, to get to know the two most treasured pleasures in this part of France!

For an insight into the history of Bordeaux then you can stroll around La Victoire, with the Victory Arch (Roman architecture) at its centre. Les Quais offers a lovely walk with stunning views, or a ride on a ferry-boat. The cultural scene is as good in Bordeaux as in any large European city, so whether you enjoy live music, an art exhibition or a show, then this city always has something to offer.

The city centre is mostly pedestrian, with charming squares and cafe terraces, where you can sit and enjoy the simple things in life! Gastronomy has an important place in the culture of the city, so here you will find a huge choice of great restaurants.

Our school building is located very close to Place Gambetta and the Place de Quinconces. It is situated in a wonderful bourgeois town house, dating back to the 19th century. There are 9 classrooms and a large lounge area, with access to the school’s own private garden. There is also a student lounge for relaxing. Close by the school you will find dozens of shops and a large choice of cosy terrace restaurants.

Immerse yourself in the language and culture during your stay in Bordeaux whilst living with a French host family! You will have the unique opportunity to meet the local people and to hopefully make long-lasting friendships. This type of accommodation gives you a “home away from home”, as all of the hosts are carefully selected and their homes are monitored regularly by the school.

You can book a room only, bed and breakfast, or half-board. The room only option is ideal for all students who wish to be more independent and to cater for all of their own meals. Bed and breakfast or half-board will give you the chance to share your meal times with your French hosts and hence the extra opportunity to improve your French language skills at the same time!

All of the hosts are situated less than 35 minutes from the school in Bordeaux.

The accommodation is available between 6pm on the Sunday before your course starts, until midday on the Saturday after your course finishes. Please inform us in advance incase extra nights are required.

Bordeaux is a striking, dynamic city due to the mixture and the unity of the classical and neo-classical architecture and modern urban development. You do not need to be here for very long to discover that all of the city centre is a World Heritage site! The city itself is appealing to all of our mature students, as one of France’s most elegant cities.

There are four visits or excursions included in the programme, from Monday to Saturday. The full details will be available on the first day of your course and depends on the period of your stay.

As the centre of an internationally famous wine growing region, a visit to Bordeaux is not complete without the essential wine-tastings or visits to nearby wineries! Our students like to explore the Châteaux of Médoc and St Emilion, as well as Bordeaux. At least one visit to a listed castle and wine-tasting is always included as part of the Club 50+ course.

There are guided visits to museums and art galleries, as well as to the archaeological site of Saint-Seurin and Palais Gallien.

There are many events to get to know the gastronomy of this region, so you may enjoy a French Patisserie class (including tasting), a cruise on the river including lunch or a local wine, or a traditional French meal, together with wine-pairing talk and tasting.

In addition to cruise boat trips, our school also organizes excursions to nearby attractions such as Cadillac, Arsins islands, Arcachon – the Pyla and Citadelle of Blave.

Our Club 50+ course in Bordeaux is available to students of this age group with any level of French. You will take a level placement test on your arrival at the school, in order to be placed in the correct class. If you are looking to improve your French language skills whilst enjoying a varied activities programme in an exciting city, then this course is ideal for you.
