English course for young students in Brighton

English course for young students in Brighton

(12-17)

If you are looking for an English course which will allow you to study alongside students of a similar age, in a beautiful coastal location that is easily accessible, then there is no better destination than Brighton! At just 40 minutes from Gatwick Airport, and just over an hour from Heathrow, Brighton is exceptionally convenient. It also has a long history as one of the UK’s top seaside resorts, making it the perfect location for your holiday!

Our school in Brighton actually uses two centres, depending on the time of year that the course is taken. If you attend this course at Easter, then you will take your lessons at the main school building, which is where our adult courses in Brighton take place. The school is located very centrally, close to both Brighton Pier and the beautiful Royal Pavilion. If you take your course in the summer, your lessons will take place at the central campus of the city’s university, which is on the same street as the main school and so is still perfectly located.

Courses in Brighton

On this course you will study English with other teenagers of a similar age to yourself. On your first day, you will take a level test which our colleagues at the school will use to make sure that you are placed in a suitable group, with students of a similar level.

If you are taking the course during Easter, you will have 20 English lessons per week, which will usually take place in the mornings, with activities arranged in the afternoons.

If you are taking the course during the summer you will be able to choose between 20 or 32 lessons per week. The ‘Intensive’ course of 20 lessons per week will mean that you will also have daily activities. Lessons on this course will usually take place either in the mornings or in the afternoons, with activities offered in the other half of the day (i.e. if you have morning lessons, you will have activities in the afternoons or vice versa).

The ‘Super-Intensive’ course of 32 lessons per week is really designed for students who are hoping to make as much progress as possible during the time that they have available. Because of the number of lessons, if you choose this course you will not have activities every day, although you will be able to participate in activities on three evenings each week, as well as a full-day excursion at the weekend.

Accommodation

During your time in Brighton you will stay with a host family in a shared room with a student of the same gender but of a different nationality. This is to encourage you to practice speaking English as much as possible.

Your hosts will be very well known to our colleagues at the school, who visit them regularly to ensure that they continue to offer suitable accommodation for students such as yourself. Your hosts may be a family with children, or they may be an older couple or single lady. They will welcome you into their home and will speak to you in English only.

You will have breakfast and your evening meal with your hosts and will eat lunch at the school with your fellow students.

Your accommodation may be up to 30 minutes from the school on foot or by public transport, but you will receive a bus pass and the school will have assessed the journey to ensure that it really is very easy for you.

Accommodation on this programme usually runs from the Sunday before your course starts, until the Sunday after the course finishes.

Supervision

This programme offers a high level of supervision, so that you will be comfortable and secure enough to allow you to enjoy learning English in Brighton. Our colleagues at the school will supervise you whilst you are in lessons or on activities and your hosts will supervise you when you are in your accommodation. However, you will have some free time and you will need to travel to school independently (but usually with your roommate).

Activities

You will have activities every day unless you choose the ‘Super-Intensive’ course, in which case you will have evening activities three times per week. You will also have one full-day excursion, which usually takes place on Saturdays.

The school offers a range of activities to suit all interests, including: mountain-biking; swimming; sea-kayaking; beach volleyball; basketball; pottery; yoga; DJ recording; treasure hunts; and excursions to places of interest such as London, Cambridge, Oxford, Stonehenge and even Thorpe Park theme park. The exact programme varies from week to week and so you will be informed as to the exact activities upon arrival.

Suitability

If you are aged between 12 and 17 years and want to spend your school holidays improving your English and having fun, then this is the course for you! You will study exclusively with students of a similar age to yourself and will stay with a host family who will take care of you and encourage you to practice speaking English. Your lessons will be complemented by a range of exciting activities and you are sure to make friends from all over the world!

How to get there

Airport transfers can be arranged but because there are several airports close to Brighton, they are not included in the course price.

Most popular tends to be the shared transfer service that the school operates on Sundays from London’s Heathrow and Gatwick Airports. Students arriving at one of these two airports on the Sunday before their course starts between 09.00 and 17.00 and who depart from these airports on the Sunday after their course finishes between 11.00 and 19.00 can take advantage of this service. Please note that, as this is a shared service, students may need to wait at the airport for up to 4 hours on arrival or departure.

Otherwise, private transfers can also be arranged.

Some airlines require minors to have an adult present and to remain at the airport until the flight has departed. If your airline does require this service, please note that you will need to book the school’s Unaccompanied Minor service which is an additional cost.
