Arabic course in Amman, Jordan
Take an Arabic course in Amman, a melting pot of history, culture, tradition and innovation.
Our school in Amman
Amman is a city of two parts, with the more commercial western part of the capital offering a fascinating contrast to the traditional and historic eastern side. Our school is located in the university district in the north of Amman, providing easy access to the delights of both parts of the city! Downtown is just a 15-minute drive away, but there are also lots of coffee shops, supermarkets and bookshops within a short walk of the school, as you’d expect from an area that accommodates the student body of the nearby University of Jordan!
The large and modern Arabic language school offers air-conditioned classrooms to ensure comfort for all students during their total immersion language programme. The facility also features a café, which overlooks the grounds of the nearby university, and a large communal study and Internet area, providing the ideal location for course participants to come together to socialise and bounce ideas off each other. Not only will you be able to mix with your fellow international students, you’ll also be able to forge friendships with local Jordanians who will be attending courses at the school. Add in the student support desk and bookshop and you have everything you need to start or continue your Arabic learning journey under one roof!

Please note that, unlike most language school programmes, the Intensive Group Arabic course at our Amman school runs from Sunday to Thursday. Accommodation is available from the Saturday before the course starts until the Friday after it finishes.
Amman
Dating back to the 13th century BC, Amman is a melting pot of history, culture, tradition and innovation. Ancient sites, such as the Roman Theatre, which dates back to the 2nd century AD, sit side by side with modern skyscrapers and shopping malls, offering visitors the opportunity to indulge their inner history buff and their inner shopaholic almost simultaneously!
Amman was originally built on seven hills but as the city has grown the number of hills has increased, and the bustling capital now spreads over 19 hills, which have been divided into 27 zones. Each zone boasts its own character and is named after the jabal (hill) or wadi that it sits on.
Head to the eastern side of Amman to immerse yourself in the city’s long and vibrant history. Here you will find the citadel and the aforementioned Roman Amphitheatre, along with the largest souks, museums and many other sites of cultural interest.
The western part of Amman is where you will find more contemporary cafes and restaurants, as well as world-renowned art galleries. The city is home to a sizeable community of students, artists and expats which contributes to the modern atmosphere that seems to be flourishing in the capital of Jordan.
Thanks to its elevation at 700 metres above sea level, Amman offers a pleasant year-round climate, meaning a visit any time of year (or even year-round!) will offer comfortable temperatures that allow visitors to explore the delights of the area with ease. Petra and Wadi Rum can experience very high temperatures during the summer months so if you plan to go on excursion to either of these places you might like to consider this when planning your trip.
Courses in Amman
Available courses
The working week in Jordan runs Sunday to Thursday and our total immersion language courses follow the same schedule. All teachers at our well-established partner school hold university degrees and have extensive teaching experience, which they are ready to share with you!
The group Intensive course focuses on teaching Modern Standard Arabic (Fus’ha), which is the official language of 23 Arab countries and is the common medium for nearly all formal printed and spoken communication. During lessons you can expect to pay due diligence to all four main language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing), and the online assessment test taken three weeks before your start date will make sure you are placed in a class with peers at a similar stage of their language learning journey. You will also take part in a short video call with a teacher in advance of travel so they can assess your oral skills. The Intensive course consists of 20 lessons per week, which will be scheduled between 09:00 and 15:00 each day. The exact timetable will be confirmed once all students have arrived and have been placed into groups. Courses start on set dates, usually once every four or five weeks. It is possible to study for whatever duration you wish, but students should always start on the official intake day.
The school offers group tuition at three broad levels (beginner, intermediate and advanced), which are then divided into sub levels. Naturally, the longer you stay in Amman, the higher level you will achieve! The maximum class size is just ten students, with the average number per group being between two and eight students. All students will receive a certificate of attendance on completion of their programme.
If you would like to expediate your progression consider adding some private lessons to your group programme, or for complete autonomy, you can book all one-to-one lessons. Private lessons allow students to focus on their individual specific areas of weakness, or allow the flexibility to cover Colloquial Arabic (Ammiya) or specialised topics (for example, media, business, and economics).
Please note that course materials are not included in the cost of the programme but you will be able to purchase all supporting text books from the on-site bookshop.

Accommodation
Available accommodation
Our school offers an accommodation option to suit all preferences! For linguistic and cultural immersion, a stay with a host family is an absolute must. Jordanians are celebrated for their hospitality and a stay in a local home will provide valuable insight into day-to-day life in Amman, as well as the opportunity to try some delicious home-cooked meals! This type of accommodation is arranged on a half-board basis, meaning your breakfast and evening meal will be provided each day. You will have your own bedroom and will share the bathroom and other public parts of the home with your hosts. Most host families live in upper-class residential areas in the northern and western parts of the city so students should be prepared to travel to and from the school by taxi each day. Host families also strongly prefer that students arrive using the school’s pre-arranged transfer, therefore you will need to book this service in addition to host family accommodation.
Please be advised that due to cultural issues, not all host families are comfortable accepting male students, therefore this type of accommodation is more readily available to female students. There are a limited number of hosts who can accommodate male students so please contact us to check availability.
For convenience, consider a stay in the nearby student residence, which offers self-catering accommodation in shared, studio or one-bedroom apartments. These accommodation types are located in the university area, within easy reach of the language school and the shops, cafes, restaurants and supermarkets that are frequented by local students. Studio apartments have a living/sleeping area, kitchenette (fridge, sink and stove), and a private bathroom. One bedroom apartments have a separate bedroom, small living area, kitchenette (fridge, sink and oven). If you prefer to stay with other students choose shared apartment accommodation. Shared apartments have two or more single or twin bedrooms, shared bathroom and shared kitchen/living room. All apartment types have a television, air-conditioning, and a desk and chair for studying (these are shared in the shared apartment). Bed linen is provided but students should pack their own towels. There is access to coin-operate laundry facilities in the building, as well as several launderettes/dry cleaning services in the local area.
All accommodation options are arranged from the Saturday before the course begins to the Friday after the course finishes.
Activities
Outside of class time students are regularly able to join a programme of diverse and engaging cultural activities that can include Arabic calligraphy workshops, Arabic henna application, traditional lunch day, cultural open days, and crafts such as the creation of coloured sand bottles, a fun process that creates a colourful and intricately designed souvenir.
In addition there will be off campus activities and excursions offered, with a trip to downtown Amman, including a traditional breakfast, at the end of the first week of the course block, a trip to Petra at the end of the second week, and a trip to Jerash and Ajloun at the end of the third week.
The school also makes use of its close connection to the University of Jordan and the local community by facilitating one-on-one language exchanges.
Many other activities can be arranged depending on the number of students enrolled at any one time. Please take note that the school reserves the right to add, remove, change, or cancel any activity as a result of various factors including, but not limited to, low uptake, adverse weather conditions, and availability of proposed activity.
How to get there
Queen Alia International Airport (AMM), also known as Amman Airport, is located 30 km south of Amman. For convenience, we would recommend booking the school’s airport transfer service at extra cost (please note students staying with a host family must book the airport transfer).
