The old town in particular, known as Cidade Velha, is a must-visit area, characterised by its charming cobblestone streets, ancient city walls, and historic architecture. Here, you can explore beautiful landmarks like the Arco da Vila and the Sé de Faro, all while soaking up the vibrant atmosphere and authentic Portuguese culture.
Visiting Faro at Christmas time is not only an opportunity to immerse yourself in Portugal’s rich history, but also a fantastic setting to learn and practise Portuguese. The friendly locals are eager to share their culture, and you can easily engage in conversations while enjoying delicious traditional dishes, or excellent value coffee.
December is ‘low-season’ in Faro, meaning that the city will not be overrun with tourists. Instead, you can enjoy Portuguese festivities in the company of friendly locals, allowing you to have a truly authentic experience of Christmas-time in the Algarve!

Christmas and New Year courses in Faro
Our Christmas and New Year language course in Faro (December 2024 to January 2025) offers a structured and festive learning experience with group lessons each day. This special Portuguese course provides a focused language immersion during the holiday season in a supportive group setting. Students are placed in classes corresponding to their current level of Portuguese and there is a particular focus on oral communication skills.
Here are the course details:
Course Details:
• 2 week Portuguese language course over Christmas and New Year.
• Minimum age 18 years.
• 12 group language lessons each week.
• Maximum of 12 students per class.
• Each day of tuition includes three classes, totalling 2.5 hours.
• Classes run from 9:00 to 12:00 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
• A break is scheduled from 10:30 to 11:00 each day.
• Suitable for students of all levels, from beginner through to advanced
Also includes:
• Course materials.
• Social/cultural activities as offered by the school.
• Half-day excursions to local points of interest.
Holiday Closures:
• The school will be closed on Christmas Day (December 25) and New Year’s Day (January 1).
Accommodation is not included in the package but can be added.
Accommodation
Accommodation is not included in this package as standard but can be added for an additional fee.
For maximum language immersion, we highly recommend staying with a Host Family. When selecting this option, you’ll receive a private bedroom and breakfast each day provided by your hosts. This leaves your evenings free to eat in local restaurants and experience the city’s festivities during your visit. Hosts are all native Portuguese speakers, meaning you’ll benefit from invaluable language practice outside the classroom. You’ll share the bathroom with your host(s) and any other students in the home. Bed linens and towels are included but laundry is not; your host(s) will be happy to advise you about nearby public services.
Students wanting a more social experience may prefer to select Shared Apartment lodging. With this option, you’ll have a private bedroom and have shared use of the communal areas such as the kitchen, bathroom(s), and lounge. The apartment is located just across the street from the school, so you’ll be within easy walking distance of both your lessons and the city’s attractions. Rooms are offered on a self-catering basis, giving you the freedom to cook for yourself during your stay. Bed linens and towels are included; the building has its own laundry room for students’ use. Please note: you’ll be required to pay a €100 security deposit in cash on arrival, which will be returned to you on departure providing the apartment is left in a suitable condition.
If you prefer, you are welcome to book just your tuition with us and arrange your own lodging in Faro.

Activities
In addition to Portuguese tuition, our school in Faro offers an extensive cultural activity programme. This consists of:
• Portuguese film screenings
• Cultural lectures/seminars
• Guided visits to local museums and monuments
• Outings to live music concerts
• Half-day excursions to local points of interest
• Sports/games such as mountain-biking or paintball
All activities are held in Portuguese, giving you the opportunity to practise your language skills outside the classroom and meet fellow language enthusiasts. Most of the activities offered at this time of year have a Christmas theme and will therefore give you an insight into the local history of Faro and Portuguese festive traditions. Some activities may incur an additional fee to cover entrance and/or transportation costs.
