Italian Club 50+ course, Bologna

If you’re looking to study Italian in an historic location with peers of your own age, then our Bologna Club 50+ programme is for you! Famous as the birthplace of ragú, as the city of porticoes, and as the home of Italy’s two towers, Bologna has the second-largest historic centre in Europe and offers a wealth of sights and sounds to all who visit. The city is variously known as la grassa (‘the fat one’) for its rich cuisine, la rossa (‘the red one’) for its red-brick buildings and socialist history, and la dotta (‘the learned one’) for its university, the oldest in Europe.

First settled in around 1,000 BC, Bologna has a long history of conquests and political divisions which has, no doubt, helped to create the atmosphere of resilience and community that the city exudes today. A key centre of art in the 16th and 17th centuries, the Bolognese school rivalled the talents of the Florentine masters and was home to notable figures such as Carracci, Domenichino, and Guercino. The city’s old town is almost entirely pedestrianised, making it safe and relatively quiet, and the surviving city gates give a glimpse into Bologna’s walled past. Other architecture of note includes the Santo Stefano complex - locally dubbed ‘Holy Jerusalem’ - Palazzo di Banchi - a great spot for grabbing local produce at one of the regular open-air markets - and the hilltop Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca. The latter plays host to the annual Ascension Day procession, which features a 10th-century icon of the Madonna with Child supposedly painted by St Luke the Baptist. The icon is carried along the world’s longest portico, which stretches a whopping 4km!

Our school in Bologna is a family-run facility established in 2000. With nearly 20 years of experience teaching foreign students of all ages and backgrounds, it’s the ideal place to expand your understanding of Italian. Just 10 minutes’ walk from the city centre and close to the beautiful Giardini Margherita park, you’ll be close to local amenities and attractions. The building is also on several main bus routes, so you can easily access the outer areas of the city if you wish. As well as bright, modern classrooms, the school has a coffee-break point, a library, and a fully-equipped kitchen used for cookery workshops.

Accommodation

If needed, we can add lodging with a local host family to your course package.

We highly recommend homestay as it provides maximum immersion and thus helps to improve your language experience. You’ll be able to practice your skills with local native speakers and gain an insight into homelife in the city. Hosts provide a laundry service once a week, and some can provide their guests with a private bathroom (subject to availability). Hosts live no more than 30 minutes’ walk or 10 - 15 minutes’ bus ride from the school. You can select this type of lodging on self-catering or half-board basis - we recommend the half-board package, which gives you breakfast and dinner each day, since mealtimes are so socially important in Italian culture.

If you prefer to have independent lodging, you are welcome to arrange your own accommodation and just organise your tuition with us. You can still utilise the included transfer service if you decide to source your own lodging.

Activities

Included in the Club 50+ programme is a selection of activities designed to improve your knowledge of Italian society and culture and to help you get to know your fellow students. As well as offering fun and engaging experiences, the social programme grants you the opportunity to practice your language skills outside the scheduled lessons, since you’ll be encouraged to talk to each other in Italian.

The programme varies but always includes:
- A welcome drink
- A meal with your teacher
- 1 activity per weekday, including guided museum tours
- 1 cookery lesson or local-produce tasting session
- 2 half-day excursions
- 1 full-day excursion, which takes place on a Saturday

Transportation for excursions and entrance to museums are included in the cost of this programme. Take a look at our sample activity schedule for a better idea of what you might be getting up to during your stay!

Suitability

This language experience package is perfect for mature students who want to improve their ability to speak the beautiful Italian language whilst learning about the history and culture of the region. Students will need some experience with Italian in order to be able to follow the lessons; anyone with A1 or higher ability can attend.

How to get there

A transfer service on arrival and departure at Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport is included in the cost of this programme. You will be collected on arrival and taken directly to your accommodation; on your last day, you will be collected from your accommodation and taken back to the airport.
Students should arrange to arrive in Bologna on the Sunday before their course starts and depart on the Saturday after their lessons finish.
