Italian Club 50+ course in Siena

15 Italian lessons per week
Small class sizes that benefit mature students
Free course materials
Daily activities (excludes Sundays)

Our Italian Club 50+ courses in Siena take place at our general language school just outside the city centre. As one of the most important cities in medieval Europe, home to the world’s oldest bank and one of the world’s oldest universities - both of which are still operational - Siena is an ideal study location for history buffs. Culture vultures will also love it for its rich artistic heritage, its stunning architecture, and its many museums. Our language centre here has 25 classrooms and a large, bright student lounge. The school’s friendly teachers will make you feel at home and help you to reach your learning goals.

Lessons take place just a stone’s throw from the university’s botanical gardens, a beautiful park with an herbarium that’s home to over 100,000 medicinal plants. Piazza del Campo, focal point of the city and site of the world-famous Palio horserace, is less than 10 minutes’ walk away. The walk there takes you past the amazing Pinacoteca Nazionale gallery, where you’ll find some of the best examples of late medieval Italian art. You will also pass the city’s stunning duomo with its striking, striped exterior, which is symbolic of Siena’s heraldic colours and the black and white horses of its legendary founders, Senius and Aschius. Its breath-taking interior was decorated by some of the finest Renaissance artists, including Pisano, Donatello, and Bernini, and really is a sight to behold. Other attractions worth visiting in the city centre include the National Archaeological Museum and Santa Maria della Scala next door, an unassuming building which hides numerous intricate frescoes and altarpieces. Bars and restaurants abound in these winding streets, offering authentic and delicious sustenance to hungry explorers.

This language school is accredited by the Italian Ministry of Education, University, and Research, so we can guarantee the quality of its language courses. What’s more, having been established in 1990 it has over 30 years of experience teaching Italian to students of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. These credentials, and its prime location in this charming and interesting city, make it a popular choice for our Italian-language students, particularly those with an interest in history and culture.

The Club 50+ package offered by this school consists of 15 Italian lessons each week (3 classes per weekday) in groups of no more than 12. Lessons take place between 09:10 and 12:00 Monday to Friday. A selection of social/cultural activities designed with mature students in mind is offered around the lesson timetable. Tuition is suitable for students of any ability level, from complete beginner to advanced. Classes follow the same format as the standard Intensive programme, though they are only offered to students over the age of 50.

The Club 50+ course is a set 2-week package and has specific start dates throughout the year.

PLEASE NOTE: Siena is a hilltop city and the centre has numerous steep slopes and flights of stairs. It may not be suitable for students with mobility issues.

Accommodation

Accommodation is not included in the Club 50+ programme as standard but can be added to your tuition package.

Homestay lodging offers a fully immersive travel experience, since you will stay with a local person, couple, or family in their own home. Because all hosts are native Italian speakers, you’ll get lots of extra language practice outside class and can thus continue learning. You’ll also get insight into the day-to-day life of normal Sienese people and have access to Italian-language television, radio, books, and more. Such a well-rounded cultural experience is guaranteed to improve your language ability by leaps and bounds!

Hosts all live within walking distance from the language school, mainly in the centre of Siena. They offer single or twin* bedrooms and 1 or 2 meals per day. Special diets can be accommodated for an additional fee (includes vegan, halal, gluten-/lactose-free, etc.). You will share the living and bathroom facilities with your host(s) and any other student(s) in the home. Bed linens and towels are included and changed regularly; you will also receive a weekly laundry service or have access to the home’s washing machine. You will have your own key to come and go as you please, though you must respect house rules and schedules.

Private apartments and hotel rooms can be booked on request; the price varies according to the time of study and the specific options available. Please contact us if you are interested in exploring these options.

*Twin rooms are only available to students travelling together.

Accommodation is available from the Sunday before the start of your course until the Saturday after your course finishes. Check-in and check-out times are usually very flexible.

Activities

The Club 50+ package includes a selection of activities designed to complement your Italian tuition, help you to get to know your fellow students, and give you a fully immersive experience in Siena. The 2-week Club 50+ activity schedule includes:

- 8 seminars about Italian culture
- 2 cookery workshops
- 1 wine-tasting session
- 1 evening concert recital
- 2 half-day excursions to local points of interest
- 1 farewell dinner

You are also welcome to attend the sessions offered to all students on the general activity programme if you wish. These can include walking tours, visits to local attractions, Italian film screenings, group meals/aperitifs, and more. Some of these are offered for free and some incur an additional fee.

Suitability

This programme is ideal for mature students wanting to study Italian with other international learners of a similar age.

Siena’s history and beauty make it a superb study location for anyone interested in Italian heritage, specifically when it comes to the country’s art and culture. Tuition is suitable for students of any ability level, from complete beginner to advanced. Students who have already studied some Italian will take a level test to ensure that they are placed in the correct group.

NOTE: Siena is a hilltop city and the centre has numerous steep slopes and flights of stairs. It may not be suitable for students with mobility issues.

How to get there

The closest international airport to Siena is Florence Airport, Peretola, which is just over an hour’s drive from our language school. It is accessible from most worldwide locations. Other nearby airports include those in Pisa and Rome.

When you land, you can either take public transport to your accommodation or we can add an airport transfer service to your booking for an additional charge. If you select this service, a driver will be waiting for you when you land and will take you directly to your lodging. If you select this service on departure as well, you will be collected from your accommodation on your last day and taken back to your chosen airport in time for your departing flight.

You should arrange to arrive in Siena on the Sunday before the course starts and depart on the Saturday after the course finishes. We may be able to arrange extra nights on arrival and/or departure for you if needed.
