Spanish Club 50+ courses, San Sebastian

Spanish Club 50+ course in San Sebastian

20 Spanish lessons per week (mixed-age)
10 Spanish mini-group sessions per week (50+ only)
Small class sizes that benefit mature students
Various optional activities (excludes Sundays)
A full-day excursion to a local town or city

Our Spanish Club 50+ courses in San Sebastian take place at our language school in the Egia district, just across the river from the main centre and the iconic Parte Vieja. The language centre has 17 air-conditioned classrooms and a spacious open-air terrace that’s ideal for studying, relaxing, or socialising after class. It also has a selection of student computers, a multi-media room offering various study materials, a dedicated library, and a student lounge. Wi-Fi is available throughout the building.

Just around the corner from the school is the Tabakalera arts & culture centre, housed in a former tobacco factory. It hosts regular exhibitions from local film screenings to works by local artists, and is also home to a creation library, media labs, and art studios. It's a great place to soak up the city’s contemporary arts scene! Only a short walk from here is the famous Bahía de La Concha, a beautiful, sweeping bay offering excellent swimming and surfing conditions. To the east of this is La Parte Vieja, a tangle of narrow streets and towering sandstone buildings forming the city’s old town. Here you’ll find fashionable shops, cosy eateries, and traditional pintxos bars. Pintxos - small servings of food similar to Castilian tapas - are famous here, thanks to the city’s numerous gastronomic societies. In fact, San Sebastian boasts the highest density of Michelin stars in the world, so there’s a truly excellent array of culinary delights on offer - and this package is the best way to experience them!

The language tuition offered by this school is accredited by the Cervantes Institute, the world’s leading authority on Spanish teaching. The school is also a member of the Federation of Associations of Spanish Schools in Spain (FEDELE), a quality-control organisation which ensures high standards in all its member schools. Even better, its courses are approved for Erasmus+, CSN, and Bildungsurlaub funding (various states).

Club 50+ course in San Sebastian

The Club 50+ package offered by this school is an Intensive + Mini-group package. This means that it consists of 20 Spanish lessons each week followed by 10 gastronomy-based mini-group sessions each week (6 classes total per weekday). The general Spanish classes are offered in mixed-age groups organised according to students’ starting ability level, while the mini-group sessions are only available to students aged 50 and over. By studying in this way, you can improve your overall Spanish knowledge while also meeting like-minded peers from around the world.

The general Spanish classes take place between 09:30 and 13:00 in groups of no more than 12. The mini-group sessions take place from either 13:15 or 14:00 each weekday in groups of up to 8. They are dedicated to exploring the local food culture and its traditions. In the afternoons, evenings, and at weekends, the school offers a selection of social/cultural activities for all students.

Tuition is suitable for all students, from complete beginners to advanced learners. Complete beginners should ensure that they start their Spanish lessons on a suitable date. Course materials for this programme are included in the course price (except those for beginners, which are purchased on-site).

If you are the only student of your level in attendance, you will receive private gastronomy-related sessions in the afternoon. These sessions can also be accommodated to your preferences and cover topics such as art or literature. Please contact us for more information about this.

The Club 50+ course can be taken for as many weeks as you like, though it has specific start dates throughout the year.

Accommodation

Accommodation is not included in the Club 50+ programme as standard but can be added to your tuition package.

To maximise your exposure to Spanish, you can stay with a local homestay host during your course in San Sebastian. You can select a single or twin bedroom* with this option, sharing access to the home’s communal spaces with your host(s) and any other students in the home. Rooms with private bathroom access can be booked on request (subject to availability). Hosts live up to 30 minutes from the school by public transport and offer rooms on a breakfast-included or half-board package (breakfast and dinner). Special diets - such as vegan, gluten-/lactose-free, halal, etc. - can be provided for an additional fee; vegetarian diets can be accommodated without a surcharge. Bed linens, towels, and a weekly laundry service are included in the accommodation package. You will have your own key to come and go as you please, but you must respect house rules and schedules.

*Twin rooms are only available to students travelling together.

Accommodation is available from the Sunday before the start of your course until the Saturday after your course finishes. Check-in and check-out times are usually very flexible.

Activities

When you book the Club 50+ package, you can attend the social and cultural activities offered to all students as well as your included gastronomy activities. These activities are provided in Spanish and thus supplement your language tuition, giving you speaking and listening experience in real-life situations. They’ll also teach you about the city and help you to get to know your fellow students.

Activities vary throughout the year and may include:
- Guided city tours
- Visits to local attractions like the San Telmo Museum and Bahía de La Concha
- Pintxos evenings
- Group meals and/or drinks in local restaurants
- Additional language workshops
- Spanish film screenings
- Food- and drink-tasting sessions
- Hiking in the surrounding mountains
- Traditional music workshops
- Half- and full-day excursions to nearby locations including Bilbao, Zarautz, Getaria, and Zumaia

Some activities are offered for free, while others will incur an additional fee to cover entrance and/or transportation costs.

Suitability

This programme is ideal for mature students wanting to meet other international learners of a similar age. Even more so, it’s perfect for foodies who want to explore Spanish culture and cuisine and, specifically, Basque gastronomy!

Tuition is suitable for students of any ability level, from complete beginners to advanced learners. You need to start your course on a specific date if you are a beginner. Please contact us if you are unsure if this programme would be suitable for you; we will be happy to advise you.

How to get there

San Sebastian Airport (Donostiako Aireportua) is a 25-minute drive from the city centre and is easily accessible from many European cities.

From here, you can either take public transport to your accommodation or we can add an airport transfer service to your booking for an additional charge. If you select this service, a driver will be waiting for you at the airport when you land and will take you directly to your accommodation. If you select this service on departure as well, you will be collected from your lodging on your last day and taken back to the airport in time for your departing flight. Airport transfers are also available at Irun/Hendaya, Biarritz, and Bilbao.

You should arrange to arrive in San Sebastian on the Sunday before the course starts and depart on the Saturday after the course finishes. We may be able to arrange extra nights on arrival and/or departure for you if needed.
