Learn Italian and the art of wine tasting in Bologna

Bologna, although perhaps unexpected, is an ideal location to learn about all things wine. A generous percentage of the region’s wine is DOC or DOCG recognized, meaning the wine produced in the area is of the high quality and standard. Taught by professional sommeliers, the wine tasting portion of the combined Italian language course is sure to elevate your senses as you dive into all this course has to offer. Additionally, all wine tastings are conducted in Italian, so students will have a fully immersive experience.

Bologna is the lively capital of the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy. The historic city is filled with stunning Renaissance structures like the Basilica di San Petronio and the Fountain of Neptune. Medieval towers are scattered around the city - remainders of Bologna’s ancient roots.

Bolonga’s extensive past is of course also related to wine. Pignoletto is Bologna’s signature wine - a white wine with a slightly bitter taste with notes of citrus and almond. This particular wine has a lengthy history dating back to the 1st century AD, and with its first mention in Bologna dating back to the 16th century. Paired with Bologna’s noteworthy gastronomy, a bad meal with a glass of wine will be a hard find!

Wine Tasting course

The Italian and Wine Tasting course combines the Intensive Italian language course with Wine Tasting lessons.

The Intensive Italian course has 23 lessons per week, with each lesson lasting 60 minutes. Italian lessons will focus on the fundamentals of the Italian language like grammar and syntax and tuition will cover this with a communicative approach. Our school offers small class sizes, with a maximum of 12 students per class.

The Wine Tasting course is taught by professional sommeliers in a specialized wine tasting room at the schools. In the first week of the course there are 2 wine tasting classes, going up to 3 classes per week the second week. Each wine tasting session lasts 3 hours. Students will try three DOP wines per week — so you can be sure the wines included in the course are of veritable quality as well as local products to Italy. Additionally, students will learn the art of wine tasting and wine pairing to various dishes. For students taking a 2-week course, paired dishes will be available during some of the wine tastings.

Accommodation

Students can either stay with a Host Family, a Shared Apartments with a Host, or in a Shared Apartment with other students during their course.

Host Families are the best option for student’s desiring a higher level of immersion. All Hosts are native Italian speakers, meaning students will have additional opportunity to practice their conversation skills outside the classroom in a supportive environment. Students can stay in a single room at half board, which typically includes breakfast and dinner. Hosts provide a weekly laundry service if students require clothes to be washed. Additionally, all Host Families stay within a maximum of 30 minutes’ walk or 15 minute bus ride from the school. Hosts will provide you with your own key to come and go at your leisure, but students will be expected to follow house rules.

Shared Apartments with a Hosts are similar to Host Families, except students have access to the Host’s kitchen and meals are self-catered. This offers students a bit more independence while still having some of the support and interaction a Host Family would provide.

Shared Apartments are on a self-catering basis and can be booked as a single rooms. Apartments are shared with other students — including a shared kitchen and common areas, as well as a shared bathroom. Apartments also have WiFi included. Shared apartments are on average no more than 5 minutes’ walk to the school.

Activities

The activity programme for the combined Intensive Italian language and Wine Tasting course includes a fascinating variety of immersive activities. You will be able to participate in the activities held outside of your lessons times and wine tasting workshops — including walking tours of Bologna city centre, visits to museums and galleries, Italian Film Club and Italian Quiz Nights.
Students can participate in full day Saturday excursions to neighbouring cities such as Florence, Venice, Ferrara, Ravenna, Verona, Parma, Mantua, Dozza, or San Marino. Excursions take place every second Saturday and typically incur a small transportation fee of about 20-30€.
