Why Learn French in Montreal?

Montreal

Learn French in Montreal, Canada, and experience one of the world’s most vibrant bilingual cities. Named after Mont Royal, the lush hill that rises at its centre, Montreal is known for its rich culture, excellent shopping and stunning natural surroundings. Mont Royal itself remains one of the city’s largest green spaces, hosting year-round sporting and cultural events that create a lively and inspiring setting for language learners.

As a dynamic centre for the arts, Montreal offers countless opportunities to immerse yourself in culture while developing your French. The city’s calendar is filled with internationally renowned festivals, including jazz, film and fireworks, along with unforgettable performances by Cirque du Soleil. These events bring French to life through music, storytelling and conversation, helping learners build confidence in an engaging and authentic environment.

Montreal’s deep history adds another layer of richness to your French learning journey. Situated on unceded Kanien’kehá:ka territory and traditionally known as Tiohtià:ke, the city has long been a gathering place for diverse communities such as the Kanien’kehá:ka, Atikamekw and Anishinaabe peoples. As you explore galleries, boutiques and cultural spaces featuring Indigenous art and craftsmanship, you will encounter French through exhibitions, interpretive guides and community events that connect the language to history and contemporary culture.

Beyond its vibrant arts and heritage, Montreal is also a gateway to outdoor adventure, with the Laurentian Mountains only an hour away. Whether you enjoy hiking and sailing in the summer or skiing and ice-skating during the winter, each season brings new opportunities to use French in everyday situations. Combined with the charm of Old Montreal, its historic streets and its European ambiance, as well as the city’s celebrated food culture from fine gastronomy to classic poutine, Montreal provides an inspiring and immersive environment for learning French throughout the entire year.

I was very impressed by the school in Montreal. The standard of teaching was excellent and they really did manage to pitch the lessons to my existing level of French so I could progress. Both the teachers and the students were all very friendly. The food was fantastic and both of my host family parents were extremely welcoming.

Good course overall with small groups which was ideal for language learning. The trips at the weekend were fantastic opportunities to visit the surrounding areas and the evenings to bars and clubs were equally good but the itinerary perhaps lacked some alcohol-free activites (sports for example) to allow people to meet each other in a more relaxed setting. I stayed with a very nice host, they were very helpful and friendly. The food was always provided and the offer of washing was made. My room was equally good and access to a computer which was a huge bonus. I was very happy there.

I was only able to take the course for one week, which I realize was not nearly enough, but I was extremely impressed with the organization, and particularly the teacher. As I am somewhat older than most of the students, I was slightly concerned about my ability to be 'back in school' but found the whole experience quite inspiring.

I thought the course was very well structured, and the various school activities allowed for students to gain a cultural appreciation for the location. Most importantly the school made the learning environment fun, and the credit for that goes to the teachers and administration who don't give up on you, and won't allow you to give up on yourself! My accommodation was excellent - a great French family, nice house, and a taste for various cuisines made it memorable. An added bonus was that I was never the only foreign language student staying with the family, and having someone to relate to helped me settle into the house and city quite quickly!

      When in Montreal

Hello everyone! This article will feature 10 fun things to do when visiting Montreal! From cultural and sporty activities, to typical Canadian foods to try, we hope these suggestions take all preferences into account. Montreal is an absolutely wonderful city, offering a wide range of varied activities during every season. Without any further ado, let’s begin! Read more...

      Incroyable! Wunderbar!

They say that French is one of the richest and most beautiful languages in the world, but if you ask me one thing it does lack is an appropriate superlative to describe Montreal. "Incroyable" is probably the closest but it still feels insufficient. Wunderbar, on the other hand, best captures my feelings about Montreal. I came to this conclusion near the end of my stay. I had just seen two amazing free shows in Old Montreal; coupled with a trip to 'Tam Tams', Montreal's weekly drum circle and cultural festival. I realized that I had just had an entire days’ worth of entertainment without spending a dime! I walked along the St. Lawrence River in the Old Port satisfied with the fact that there are very few places in the world where you can do that. Certainly, not in Berlin that’s for sure! Retail Therapy in Montreal!

One word and one word only comes to mind when I think of Montreal: SHOPPING! As your average red-blooded American girl, I already had my share of shopping experience under my oh so fashionable belt when I arrived in Montreal, BUT even I was soon exhausted from going from boutique to fabulous boutique in this amazing city! Of course, I’d come here to learn French, and that’s what I did – not only in my classes every morning in the school – but also every afternoon, out exploring the city and its wonderful shops! There simply isn’t enough time in the day to see every store in Canada’s fashion capital and thanks to their expansive underground, you don’t even have to go outside the city centre if you don’t want to. Sure, they have big name chains but what makes Montreal shopping particularly special is the little shops you can’t find anywhere else. What’s best about these tiny boutiques is that you know no one back home is going to be wearing what you’re wearing. Read more...
