Spanish and Skiing in Granada

Spanish and Skiing in Granada

Not only is Granada without doubt one of Spain’s most beautiful cities, it is also just half an hour from the Sierra Nevada, the most southern ski station in Europe and Andalucia’s only ski resort! The Sierra Nevada Mountains are the highest mountains in mainland Spain. The skiing resort has over 100 km of ski slopes with over 100 runs and over 20 lifts. The highest of the slopes extends up to an altitude of 3,300 metres.

The ski season in Sierra Nevada typically runs from late November to early May. However, the best snow conditions are usually from December to March.

Whilst our school does not offer a specific Spanish and Skiing course for individuals, you can book your Spanish course with accommodation and then ski at the weekends. Alternatively, we can arrange a special Spanish and Skiing package for small groups of at least three adults. Please feel free to contact us for more details about this!

Skiing in Granada

Sierra Nevada is about a 30-40 minute drive from Granada. You can get there by taxi for approximately €80 euros, or rent a car in the city. The roads are generally well-maintained. Ensure your car has snow chains or winter tires if the weather is harsh. You can also travel by bus which takes 1 hour 10 minutes but costs less than €10. The bus from Estación de Autobuses de Granada to Pradollano departs daily.

You can either rent ski equipment in Granada or directly at the Sierra Nevada resort. Renting in Granada might give you more options, and it can be more cost-effective. There are several rental shops around the city. However, renting at the resort is more convenient if you don't want to carry your equipment around.

You can purchase lift passes directly at the Sierra Nevada ski resort or online in advance. Booking online is often quicker and can save you time on busy days. Look for packages that might include lessons, equipment, or multiple days on the slopes.

If you or someone in your group is a beginner, there are numerous ski schools in Sierra Nevada that offer lessons. These can be booked online or at the resort, and there are options for private lessons or group sessions.

Après-Ski in Granada

After a day on the slopes, return to Granada to enjoy the city’s vibrant nightlife. Explore tapas bars, especially in the neighborhoods of Realejo or Albayzín. For non-skiers: Sierra Nevada also offers snowshoeing, sledding, and scenic walks.

Granada offers a rich blend of history, culture, and vibrant city life. A visit to the Alhambra, the city’s crown jewel, is a must. This breathtaking palace complex, with its intricate Moorish architecture, lush Generalife Gardens, and panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada, provides hours of exploration. Nearby, the Albayzín, Granada’s old Moorish quarter, is perfect for wandering through narrow, cobblestone streets, admiring whitewashed houses, and discovering hidden squares. Don’t miss the Mirador de San Nicolás for a stunning view of the Alhambra against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains.

After skiing, consider relaxing at the Hammam Al Ándalus, which offers traditional Moorish baths in the heart of Granada.

Accommodation

Choose a Spanish Host Family with half-board (two meals per day) or full-board (three meals per day) for a great fully immersive experience. It offers a firsthand look at local culture and daily opportunities to practice Spanish. Our school carefully matches students with experienced families or single homeowners, ensuring a comfortable stay.

If you want more independence but still enjoy a social atmosphere, a Shared Apartment is ideal. You’ll live with other students from the school in a single or shared room, allowing you to make friends and practice Spanish together. The apartments have fully equipped kitchens, shared living areas, and bathrooms. Essentials like a washing machine and bed linen (but not towels) are provided, combining independence with a sense of community.

For maximum privacy and a quiet space to focus, a Studio Apartment is perfect. This self-contained option includes your own kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom, allowing you to set your own schedule. It offers full independence while keeping you close to the school and the city’s vibrant life-ideal for those seeking more privacy in a comfortable setting. Alternatively, you can book the Spanish course in Granada without accommodation and arrange your own.

Activities

Our school in Granada offers a variety of social and cultural activities that are included in the price of the Spanish course. Activities vary depending upon the week, but may include movie nights, welcome drinks, thematic evenings, wine-tasting, Salsa and Flamenco evenings, art exhibitions, and much more! There are also optional activities available at an extra cost, including weekend excursions (Córdoba, Seville, Cadiz, etc.), but you may prefer to save your weekends for skiing!

How to get there

Most students fly into either Granada or Malaga Airport. From Granada Airport, a city bus takes you directly to central Granada. Malaga Airport is also well-connected to Granada, with a 45-minute bus ride.

We can arrange airport transfers to or from both Granada and Malaga airports.

Traveling to Sierra Nevada from Granada: Sierra Nevada is about a 40-minute drive from Granada and can be reached by car or taxi. Buses also run from the city to the ski resort, making it a convenient trip for outdoor activities year-round.
