This summer English course for 16-17 year olds in Cambridge is a chance to explore traditional student life in the city. Your English lessons will focus on communication skills and themes closely related to the university’s history and culture, including famous alumni, sporting traditions, scientific discoveries, and a comparison with other leading universities around the world.
The programme includes 20 general English lessons (15 hours) per week and comprises a combination of communication development and themed topics on Cambridge University, offering a fantastic taste of life as a student in Cambridge! You will be learning English exclusively with students of a similar age to yourself (from 16-17 years) from all over the world and you will be encouraged to practice your English skills as much as possible, both in class and during the exciting programme of cultural activities and excursions. All of the teachers are highly qualified, native speakers who have a great deal of experience teaching English as a foreign language to international students of this age group.
During the busiest weeks of the English summer camp, students follow a "zig-zag" timetable, where some will have activities in the morning and classes in the afternoon, while others will have morning classes and afternoon activities. This schedule alternates each week, so if a student has morning classes one week, they will have afternoon classes the following week. Classes run from Monday to Friday, with an excursion on Saturdays. A typical day at on the English course for teenagers might include morning lessons from 9:00 to 10:30, focusing on English topics and life skills like past tenses and speaking practice through the theme "A True Friend." From 11:00 to 12:30, students explore Cambridge University traditions in discovery lessons. In the afternoon, you might have a walking tour of Cambridge from 13:30 to 15:00 followed by evening activities, such as the Hidden Cambridge selfie challenge, from 19:30 to 21:00.
This course is designed for older teenagers, ages 16-17, who want to study alongside other international students of a similar age in a location famous for its academic excellence.
Our Summer school for teenagers in Cambridge
This summer course for teenagers in Cambridge takes place in one of two colleges, both located just 5-10 minutes’ walk from the city centre. One of the buildings is a stunning example of Victorian Gothic architecture, belonging to the university and dating back to the eighteenth century. The other is a private college housed in a charming four-storey Georgian building, surrounded by its own beautiful gardens.
Both campuses offer excellent student facilities, including spacious and comfortable classrooms, a lecture hall, library, and student common rooms. There are also traditional and modern dining halls, as well as outdoor playing fields for recreational activities. Students can enjoy the convenience of single residential bedrooms on-campus, with some twin rooms available on request. The campuses are only a short walk from the heart of Cambridge, providing easy access to the city’s vibrant atmosphere.
Accommodation
Your accommodations for this programme are located at Ridley Hall College and Newnham College, with most rooms being single bedrooms, although some twin rooms are available as a special request, in which case students will be assigned a roommate of the same gender. Bathrooms and showers are shared facilities, but en-suite rooms can also be requested at Ridley Hall.
Meals are served at both residences, offering a variety of hot and cold food options with vegetarian selections available for each meal. Students with specific dietary needs are encouraged to inform us in advance. This full-board arrangement includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily, with packed lunches provided on weekends.
Staff members stay in the residences as well, ensuring care and supervision at all times.
Laundry facilities are available on-site, with students responsible for washing their own clothes. One free wash per week is provided, and bed linen is also supplied, which is changed and laundered weekly. Students will receive keys to their rooms and residence entrances, with a refundable £20 deposit collected when keys are issued to cover potential loss.
Activities
Our English school in Cambridge arranges four afternoon activities and seven evening activities each week. A wide range of activities are offered, from sports such as football, basketball and badminton, to cultural activities such as punting on the River Cam, afternoon tea and tours of nearby colleges and churches, meaning that there really is something for everyone! You will be encouraged to speak English as much as possible during these activities. The school also arranges conversation clubs and English language film screenings, to help you further develop your speaking, listening and comprehension skills.
Each week, there is one full-day excursion to destinations such as London, Hampton Court Palace, Stratford-upon-Avon (Shakespeare's hometown), as well as Canterbury Cathedral and Leeds Castle.

Supervision
This English summer programme in Cambridge offers a high level of supervision while giving teenage students some independence and free time, especially on Sundays, which are designated as free days. Although activities are available every evening, students have the option to go out if they prefer. However, all students must return to their accommodation no later than 21:30.
How to get there
Airport transfers are included for students arriving at or departing from London Heathrow or Stansted Airports on Sundays, the designated arrival and departure days for this course. If you arrive or depart on a different day or at a different airport, additional fees will apply so please contact us for details. It is possible for you to arrange your own transport if you prefer.
Arrivals should be between 14:00 and 17:00 on Sunday. Our school’s transfers team will meet you at the airport and take you to your accommodation by taxi or coach. Your flight should arrive no later than 20:00 on the Sunday before your course starts.
For departures, our school will return you to the airport on the Sunday after your course ends, assist with check-in, and guide you through to security. Unaccompanied Minors (UM) will be handed over to airline staff. Please ensure you check your airline's requirements for under-18 travel, including any Unaccompanied Minor services. A signed 'Parental Consent to Travel' form is required for students under 18 travelling without a parent or guardian.
