Details

15 or 20 English lessons per week + activities and excursions + full-board accommodation in the student residence. All rooms in the residence, which is part of a university that was once voted Sports University of the Year by The Times and The Sunday Times, are single rooms, ensuring young students get a good nights sleep when they retire at the end of each day! It is possible to pay a supplement for a room with a private bathroom, although students staying in standard rooms only have to share a bathroom with one other student. The standard rooms are in a three-storey building, and each floor has four bedrooms and two bathrooms. En-suite rooms are grouped into 8-room apartments, with a communal area that has a kitchenette. As the programme is offered on a full board basis this isn’t equipped for cooking, but students will be able to store food or soft drinks in the fridge should they wish to. All rooms are lockable and students will be provided with a key that they should look after carefully!

All meals, including a hot lunch, are provided in the on-site cafeteria. If you have any allergies or dietary requirements, please be sure to mention these at the time of booking.

There is wireless internet access in the student lounge. Bed linen is provided, students should pack their own towels. Laundry is not included but there are facilities at the residence (app-operated).

As standard, accommodation is included from the Sunday before the course begins to the Saturday after the course finishes.

The core English programme of 15 lessons per week is usually scheduled to take place between 09:00 and 11:45, with a 30-minute break scheduled 10:30-11:00. Every day, your native English speaking teachers will focus on enhancing your conversation skills, encouraging clear communication and increasing confidence. Naturally, grammar skills and reading and listening comprehension activities will also be incorporated into the lessons. Students who wish to learn at a more intensive pace can book a course of 20 lessons per week, with the extra lesson being held 11:45 to 12:30. This fourth lesson is devoted to project-based learning, group dynamics, writing finesse, and public speaking. For both courses students are required to have at least level A1 of the Common European Framework. Levels A2 - C1 are also catered for.

The maximum class size is 16 students, and as all students are divided into groups according to ability you can be certain of great progress. For a more personalised approach, there is also the option to book an Intensive Mini Group programme, which offers classes with a maximum of just six students per group (suitable for levels A2-B2). Please contact us for more information on this option.

In addition to the total immersion English classes students will take part in anexciting and varied programme of activities and excursions. On arrival, the welcome meeting and orientation tour will ensure you are given all of the necessary details you will need for your stay. You will also be given information on how to sign up for the different activities, which can include:

- Full day trips to cities such as London, Plymouth, Bath, Cornwall and St. Ives, Glastonbury, Cardiff and Bristol
- Half day trips to places like Exmouth, Torquay, Dartmoor, Lyme Regis, and Lynton and Lynmouth
- Sports (basketball, tennis, dodgeball, weekly swim sessions on-site, football, volleyball, badminton, Zumba, dance, and ultimate frisbee)
- Games (escape room, geocaching, treasure hunts, photo competitions, water balloon battle)
- Arts and crafts (customise your t-shirt, make friendship bracelets, DIY dream catcher, create your own postcard/souvenirs, graffiti workshop, Mandala workshop)
- Health and beauty (henna tattoos, nail art, make up workshops, yoga and relaxation)
- Food and drink masterclasses (crêpe workshop, cake pop workshop, ‘mocktails’ workshop, afternoon tea, party planning workshop)
- Evening activities (karaoke, games, quizzes, open stage, talent competitions, theme parties)

Although activities are mandatory for students under the age of 16 years, there is a daily ‘Chill-Out’ option, where students can relax in a common area under the supervision of a staff member.

All students are strongly encouraged to participate in the included activity programme, but older teenagers (16 and over) will be able to leave the campus grounds on their own with parental permission as long as they are with a friend or in a small group. Students aged 13-15 years cannot leave the campus without supervision but will be allowed some unsupervised free time while on a town walk or excursion. Naturally, students aged 10-12 years are not allowed to leave the campus at all without a staff member.

Suitability

Young students aged 10-17 years, who have at least a rudimentary understanding of English (A1), are able to enjoy this programme.

School

Our course for young students in Exeter takes place on the university grounds, which are located just 20 minutes from the town centre. The classrooms and accommodation are all on the same campus, which also boasts 350 acres of woodland, lakes and parks! Sports enthusiasts will also be happy as there are world-class sports facilities on offer, including tennis courts, hockey fields, a rugby pitch and outdoor swimming pool. In addition, there is also a student lounge which is used for relaxation, some activities, and as a meeting point for students and their mentors.

Exeter

Exeter is an ideal location for teenagers wanting to take an English course thanks to its small size and friendly ambience. Most attractions are within walking distance of the centre, and although technically a city thanks to the university - which provides a vibrant, youthful atmosphere - and cathedral, Exeter has the feel of a large town. The magnificent Exeter Cathedral, parts of which date back to the 1100s, dominates the town centre, and the adjoining Cathedral Green is the perfect place to relax in the sunshine with a soft drink after classes. Shopaholics should head to Gandy Street for a choice of gift shops, Fore Street for more unusual options, and High Street for well-known brands and stores. If shopping isn’t your thing, head to the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, an award-winning facility that teaches visitors about the city’s 2,000 year history all in one visit!

How to get there

Exeter has a small airport but flights to this destination are limited. Most travellers will probably find London Heathrow to be the most convenient option, and we are pleased to be able to offer a budget-friendly group transfer service from/to this airport (arrival Sunday, departure Saturday). There are strict time restrictions for this option so please contact us for more details. Transfers can also be arranged from Exeter, Bristol, London Gatwick and London Stansted airports. Alternatively, students can arrange their own arrival and departure independently, although the school may require you to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Travel should be arranged on the Sunday before the start of the course and on the Saturday after the course finishes.
