Summer Spanish language course for Young Students in Barcelona
(16-20 years old)Barcelona is no doubt a tourist hot-spot — and for good reason! It has all the appeal of a mediterranean city along with the excitement of a trendsetting environment in fashion and design. The cosmopolitan capital of Catalonia is filled with Art Nouveau architecture and artsy venues for theatre lovers and art connoisseurs alike. There is plenty to see at every corner — between the mesmerising architectural masterpieces and the shopping districts, young students are sure to be entertained.
Our school is nestled right in the Eixample district — which sits near the old city. The district is filled with shops, greenspaces and galleries, providing plenty of places to visit outside of Spanish classes. Teacher are native Spanish speakers with experience teaching students between the ages of 16 and 20, ensuring a quality education during the student’s time abroad.
The 1-4 week Spanish summer course is made up of 20 Spanish lessons per week with each lesson being 50 minutes in length. Spanish lessons will cover the fundamentals of the language such as grammar, vocabulary, proper pronunciation and comprehension. There will also be 2 group project lessons where students will participate in activities such as debates and trivia to encourage creativity and collaborative learning. Class sizes are small with a maximum of 16 students per group, creating a more relaxed environment for students to learn and practice amongst their peers. The course is open to students from levels A1 to C2 and students will be place in groups corresponding to their level.
The Life Skills workshops are held once a week and focus on aspects like Mediterranean Mindfulness and Wellbeing, Budgeting, cooking and first aid, as well communication skills regarding verbal and non-verbal communication. All Life Skills workshops are conducted in Spanish to ensure complete immersion during the course.
All instructors are certified native Spanish speakers and are experienced with teaching students of this age group. Course materials are included in the course.
The city’s best-known attraction is probably the Basilica La Sagrada Familia - which has been under construction since 1882. Originally designed by Francisco de Paula del Villar, the basilica began in a much more neo-Gothic style similar to the popular architectural designs of the time before Antoni Gaudi took over the project in 1883. Gaudi took the construction in a different direction. Antoni Gaudi would proceed to work on the Basilica until his death in 1926, and La Sagrada Familia remains unfinished to this day — with multiple architects taking the helm since Gaudi’s passing.
The Gothic Quarter contains an incredible mix of historical and modern architecture in its winding streets. The area has peaceful plaças to sit and enjoy a coffee on a sunny day to unwind and take in the scenery. One of the Quarter’s main attractions is the Barcelona Cathedral. The eye-catching structure took well over a century to complete — its construction beginning in 1298. Due the lengthy construction period, the cathedral’s final Neo-Gothic architectural style does not match the original Catalan Gothic style in which it began. The Gothic quarter has been an important part of the city since Roman times - with parts of the Roman temple of Augustus remaining.
Barcelona’s more metropolitan areas contain most of the aforementioned Antoni Gaudi’s work like the delightfully irregular and colourful Casa Batlló, along with the Santa Caterina Market designed by Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich’s German-style Pavillion. The grid-style layout is filled with shops, restaurants and café’s sure to keep students entertained for the length of their course.
Accommodation
Students will have the option of either staying with a Host Family or in Student Residence during their summer course.
Host Families are native Spanish speakers, allowing for greater immersion during their course. Students can stay in single rooms at half-board - which includes breakfast and dinner. Bed linen and towels are included. All host families are in safe neighbourhoods with easy access to public transport. Hosts are approximately 20 to 35 minutes from the school by public transportation. Students under the age of 18 must stay with a host family for the duration of their course.
Student Residence is available for students aged 18 and over. Students can stay in single rooms with private bathrooms, as well as a half board meal plan. Bed linen and towels are included. The residence building is approximately 20 to 40 minutes from the school by public transport, with easy access to stops.

Activities
Two immersive activities per week are included in the Spanish summer course, giving students the opportunity to practice their Spanish in real-life settings. The activities are constructed to allow students to experience everyday situations in Spanish, improving their speaking and listening skills all the while experiencing everyday life in Barcelona.
There will also be 4 cultural and social activities per week where students can learn the intricacies of Catalan life, all the while making friends with fellow classmates. Activities will vary from week to week, but some example activities that may be included are guided walks of the city, tapas tours to experience the local gastronomy, gallery and museum visits, and more! All activities are conducted in Spanish to maintain immersion and to continue the learning experience outside lesson time.
Supervision
Students will have access to a 24/7 emergency helpline should they need it. Host families and the student residence buildings are in safe neighbourhoods to ensure the safety and comfort of students, and to put parent’s minds at ease.
How to get there
Transfers are available from/to Barcelona El Prat airport for an additional fee. Either single transfers or return transfers are available. Students under the age of 18 are required to return transfers.
