Unsurprisingly, London always comes out as a clear favourite amongst our students for English courses. This is, after all, the cradle of the English language, as well as being one of the most important cities in the world with regards to business and trade. London is large city with a huge personality. Take a ride to the top of the London Eye, from where the panorama will include the grandeur and history of Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament, as well as the modernity of the Gherkin and the Shard on Canary Wharf. Wherever you look, there is more to explore and discover.
In Britain, all roads really do lead to London, making it an excellent base from which to explore other cities and attractions. It is also very easy to reach from almost any country, thanks to its several international airports. London is a large city, so you should expect to need to use public transport to get around, but the famous underground makes this very quick and easy.
Our school in London (Russell Square)
Bloomsbury, part of the Borough of Camden, is where you will find our English school in London. Close to Russell Square and just a few minutes’ walk to the British Museum, Oxford Street and Covent Garden, this makes the perfect base from which to explore the city. Bloomsbury itself is known for its role in English literature, as home to the ‘Bloomsbury Group’, a collection of artists including Virginia Woolf and E.M. Forster and so is a wonderful setting for your English course.
The school occupies a large, old building, but offers modern facilities for students including interactive whiteboards, a digital language lab and a self-access centre with a variety of resources. There are 51 classrooms and 58 Internet-connected computers, as well as free wireless Internet access. The school even has its own café and roof-top garden! The school is wheelchair accessible.
Courses in London (Russell Square)
On arrival at the school you will be placed in a suitable group with students of a similar level. This will be automatic if you advise us that you are a complete beginner. If you already have some experience of studying English, you will take a level test on arrival. You can choose to follow the course for any duration from 1-36 weeks or more. Every fortnight you will take a short test, just to check your progress. You will also be invited to discuss your progress with your main teacher once every two weeks. After class, you can continue your studies in the self-access centre.
The range of course options available should mean that you will find a course to meet your requirements at this school. Group courses of 20 or 28 lessons per week (‘Intensive’ or ‘Super-Intensive’) are usually the most popular, as they will help you to improve your level of English in groups of no more than 12 students. You can choose between a morning or afternoon timetable.
Of course, private lessons are also available and are particularly useful if there is something on which you wish to focus during your course.
If you are learning English for business, one of our specialist ‘Business English’ courses are a fantastic option as they will allow you to concentrate on the language you need for this.
We also offer a special ‘Exam Preparation’ course for students who are preparing for the Cambridge Exams.
The ‘Academic Year’ course is a special long-duration course, offered for 24-36 weeks. This is suitable for students who really need to reach an advanced level of English by the end of their course.
We can also arrange your accommodation, if you prefer. Our London Russell Square school offers host family and student residence accommodation.
Staying with a host family is a wonderful experience, as it will mean you have lots of practice speaking English with native speakers! It will also give the opportunity to experience what it is to be a Londoner! Normally, you will have your own room and will share the bathroom with your hosts, although a limited number of executive host families offer private bathrooms. You can choose to stay with your hosts on a bed and breakfast or half board basis.
The school also has its own on-site residence. As this is such a convenient location, availability for this type of accommodation is very limited. Bathrooms are shared and meals are served in the school’s café. This accommodation option is offered on a bed and breakfast or half board basis.
The other year-round residence option is offered on a self-catering basis and offers en-suite bathrooms. It is separated into apartments of 4-6 rooms and is approximately 20 minutes’ walk from the school.
During the summer, we can also offer university residence accommodation within easy walking distance of the school. Rooms at this residence also offer an en-suite bathroom. This residence is offered on a self-catering basis and is also divided into apartments of 5-8 bedrooms.
Our colleagues in London will make sure that you will be entertained during your time with them. A range of optional activities are offered, such as walking tour, theatre trips, museum visits, pub evenings, student parties, and excursions to places of interest such as Cambridge, Oxford and Stonehenge!
As the activities are optional, they are not included in the course price. Therefore, there is normally a small additional charge to cover any costs.
How to get there
There are several international airports that serve London. If you fly into any of these, it is very easy to reach central London by public transport. Alternatively, we can arrange airport transfers from Heathrow, Gatwick, City, Stansted or Luton Airports for an additional fee.
