Learn Spanish in Havana

Learn Spanish in Havana, the wonderfully vibrant capital of Cuba, a city full of 50’s American cars, beautiful Hispanic buildings, with an atmosphere quite unlike anywhere else! In Havana Latin culture meets a Caribbean climate, offering a unique Spanish speaking location which is undeniably enchanting. The Cuban people are exceptionally friendly and Havana also has the advantage of being a very safe destination for students who wish to study Spanish there.

The colonial grandeur of Havana may have faded slightly, but this only adds to the charm and helps give this Cuban cosmopolitan city a very authentic feeling. Studying on one of our Spanish language programmes in Havana is slightly different to our other programmes as the lessons take place in the teacher’s home or directly in your host family accommodation. All native Cuban teachers and Spanish speaking hosts live in the same area of the city, in downtown Havana.

Our school in Havana

Our Havana (Vedado) programme is located in Vedado, a downtown area of Havana. Vedado is a vibrant area with many restaurants, cafes, bars and nightclubs, and is also famously the home of El Malecón, a seaside walkway that is well known for being one of the city’s favourite meeting points! A local coordinator is present at all times to offer students support and assistance throughout their stay in the Cuban capital.

Courses in Havana

Available courses

You can take an Intensive group course of 20 Spanish lessons/week, which is perfect if you are hoping to improve your overall level. If you would like to spend some time focusing on any particular areas of the language which you feel require greater attention, you may like to consider taking a ‘Combined course’ of 20 lessons and 5 or 10 private lessons, or a course of 20 to 30 private lessons/week. Our Havana (Vedado) group and combined courses are usually offered for a minimum of 2 weeks. If you would like to take your course for just one week, you may like to consider taking a course of private lessons. Your lessons will take place either at your teacher’s home, or at one of the host family’s homes, which are all located in Vedado and are all within walking distance of the co-ordinator’s house. Group sizes are kept small, with a maximum of just three students per class.

    Accommodation

    Available accommodation

Shared rooms are also available for students travelling with a friend or relative. Host Families are carefully chosen by our school and can be a married couple or single person, with or without children. It is not that common for Cuban hosts to eat with students, but we do encourage you to try and speak as much Spanish as possible with your host, your classmates and Cuban locals. All host families are located in Vedado, an area of Havana next to Miramar and within walking distance of the historic centre of Havana.

    Activities

Whilst you are studying in Vedado, Havana, you will have plenty of opportunity to learn more about the local culture, as well as to practise speaking Spanish outside of the classroom, thanks to the school’s cultural activities programme! Typical activities arranged include horse riding, scuba diving, tennis and football, as well as excursions to Santa Maria beach and Playas del Este, as well as visits to local rum and tobacco factories! All activities are optional, and may incur a small charge payable directly to the school.

I took my classes in another casa - instructors were wonderful. Paper and pen shortage (expensive for the instructors to purchase on limited income). They overcome this by using well worn pictures and worksheets. Students taking courses in Cuba should bring lots of paper, pens, worksheets, dictionary etc.

My casa was clean and decorated in a very Cuban style. It was on the second floor of a 3 story building. Too many keys to carry about (minor problem). It was more of a business than a Familia. The cooks ( wonderful) were hired staff and did not live in the casa as was the cleaning lady. the casa was conveniently located near everything-a major plus.

Fellow students in my casa were like-minded individuals of all ages and nationalities wishing to experience the Cuban adventure. I will remember this as a wonderful unique adventure and learning experience.

First week was fine ...lots of listening. Second week : individual classes, young teachter, was using recent teaching manuals including exercises. Best for a beginner. Felt like coming home after classes, good and friendly cook. Good to be together with other students.

Being a more mature (!) student and having no previous experience of the language at all I was worried about being in a large group and holding people back but having classes with just myself and stepfather in was ideal as we could go at our own pace. Pedro our tutor was very patient and I really enjoyed the mix of language and culture learning. It was perfect for me.

The accommodation was better than I expected - very clean and the ensuite bathroom and air conditioning were added bonuses. The food was also very good with plenty of fresh fruit and a varied menu. The family and staff were friendly.

The whole experience was much better overall than I was expecting and I really enjoyed it. I will definitely keep up the language learning and have already recommended your company to friends and colleagues. Many thanks.

Pedro Perez Bretos is outstanding in every way. Certainly for the Spanish instruction, but also for a wealth of information about Cuban life, politics, culture, history, etc. He was the perfect instructor for us.

Rosa provided a "home" for us. We were very satisfied. She even took us out to a club for music and dancing....and presented us with gifts on our last day.

My experience with my teacher, Dulce Maria Dominquez Días, was very good. I had private instruction in grammar and conversation and we visited some local spots together so I could feel comfortable with public transport and see some attractions including a museum. She shared a lot of information about Cuban life and culture. We were together for 20 hours across 4 days, so it was intense but fun.

The accommodations were in a good location and were comfortable. Meals were fine, too, taken family style with the other guests. Spanish lessons were at the housenext door. Very convenient!

Enjoyable, I liked staying in the casa with the other students, the addition of salsa was a lot of fun. A good mix of work and play. The beautiful setting of Havana helped a fair bit. Adequate, clean, accommodation in a good location, good meals and friendly staff.

A very worthwhile and enjoyable experience, I will be attending another course in the next year, possibly Malaga. A great way to learn a new language.

The course was fantastic - although I was expecting to learn in a small group, I actually had 1:1 lessons which was great. The first lesson was a challenge as they need to understand your level and because it is 1:1 for 3 1/2 hours it is intense, however using time in the afternoons to try & consolidate, my Spanish came on in leaps & bounds.

The casa in Havana was great - I had my own room & bathroom which was great. The room was cleaned regularly & bedding changed etc. The location is also really good, Carida the cook provides amazing food & they organised salsa classes for us which we took every afternoon which also helped clear the brain after an intense morning of Spanish.

Havana is an amazing place to go & particularly to immerse yourself in by doing a course like this. I did 2 weeks which was enough for me but the experience was so good I would like to take a course like this every year moving forward. Fantastic experience - thank you!

My teacher was excellent. He made the lessons very enjoyable and interesting and we covered a lot of ground. He was polite, friendly, charming, very well-educated. He was very knowledgeable about Cuba and Havana and was generous with his opinions and background. The fact he spoke both French and English was also extremely helpful in his ability to teach me Spanish. The experience more than met my expectations.

Thank you for organising this for my children and I. It definitely enhanced our holiday in Cuba and meant we understood much better both the history and the day-to-day life in Havana.

Despite very few resources and six hours lessons every day, the time flew by. Very friendly, approachable teachers and staff who were very patient and encouraging. I feel as though my skill and confidence in speaking, writing and understanding the Spanish language has really improved. The dance lessons were AMAZING - I loved them and would go back for them if nothing else.

My teacher was great; he let me decide what things I wanted to cover but had suggestions of his own too. He also had amazing general knowledge so I learnt a bit about everything not just spanish! My course really helped me improve quickly (20 hours a week private).

    Accommodation
In the end I was happy in my accommodation but I think the booking process was a bit misleading. When I chose a host family with a private room I wasn't aware that there could be other students in the same building as me. This could be good as it was nice (and safer!) to have company to go out with in the evenings, but it also meant that I spoke a lot of English in the house as one of the students was an absolute beginner in Spanish and couldn't understand the rest of us if we spoke in Spanish. This was a bit of a problem for me because I selected a host family purposely to be totally immersed in Spanish and this wasn't always the case. However, I really liked the ladies we lived with and thought that the directors took care of us very well, especially food-wise!

    Extra
I had a great experience in Cuba and would like to say thank you to the hosts I lived with, the directors and also the booking staff who were always on hand to answer my (many) questions.

Good language course. Teacher was good at setting the level of learning that fitted to me and the other student that was in my group - She pushed us to learn. The room with the host family was a private room with my own bathroom, clean and included the basic things needed.

Ernesto was the perfect teacher, patient and effective. I was sad to say goodbye. Lydia is a superb host!

My teacher was excellent and very excxperienced. I had 5 hours a day which was too much for my head to cope with, but every twenty minutes or so she would change the method of teaching to keep my interest up. Although I was totally exhausted each day, I learned a lot, and I still go over the excellent notes I have from the class.

The small group scenario meant that I progressed more rapidly in my Spanish than at any time since I began learning the language. I think my hosts more than compensated for the slightly spartan arrangements by being super friendly and overwhelmingly generous on the food front.

My teacher Vivian is a teacher of the highest order. Utterly responsive to me she gave me confidence to have a go. Our conversations ranged from 'what you did yesterday' through history, culture, art and artists, life and living. Equal attention was given to the form and content of what was being said, understanding as she did, that for me, the content of our dialogue was important. I enjoyed our lessons, loved doing my homework and would recommend her as a teacher to anyone on the spectrum of Spanish learner.

The teacher was an amazing character, very intelligent and able in her job, with fantastic history. She was also very flexible in what she taught. It is good to do four intense hours in the morning, leaving the afternoon free to explore. Also, salsa lessons were available too. Socially, it is good that students are encouraged to meet every evening at 9pm in a local bar...it is very reassuring, especially on your first few days.
