Why learn French in Le Gosier, Guadeloupe?

Plage de la Datcha, Le Gosier

If you fancy honing your French language skills in a tropical paradise, look no further than our language programme in Le Gosier! Once a military outpost (after being colonised by the French in the 17th century), Le Gosier is now one of the main tourist destinations in the Guadeloupe archipelago. Located on the southern coast of Grand Terre, Le Gosier - which was named after a species of pelican called ‘grand gosier’ (translation = large throat pouch) - offers stunning beaches, exciting water sports, exotic flora and fauna, historical monuments and around 2500 hours of sunshine per year!

Life in Le Gosier is relaxed and serene. There are lots of attractions to engage visitors, but the jewel in Le Gosier’s crown are its stretches of golden sand and crystal-clear waters. Plage de la Datcha is one of the most popular beaches thanks to the presence of beach bars, restaurants and amenities such as showers and public bathrooms, and it’s less than a 10-minute walk from our language school. From this beach you can admire Îlet du Gosier, a small island located just off the coast. It’s possible to visit the island and spend some time exploring the wilderness. Be sure to check out the white and red-striped lighthouse up close, and rumour has it there is a BBQ shack and delicious sorbet vendor to be found somewhere on the islet! It’s possible to get to the island by shuttle boat, kayak, or even by swimming for those that feel energetic enough!

When (if?!) you want to escape the sun, a visit to Guadeloupe Aquarium is a must. This popular attraction is home to 80 species of fish and 50 species of coral and educates visitors on local marine life and the challenges it faces. There is also a sea turtle rescue centre which can care for between 10 and 30 turtles each year. Guadeloupean waters are home to five of the seven species of sea turtle (the green turtle, the hawksbill turtle, the leatherback turtle, the loggerhead turtle and the olive ridley turtle) and any injured or sick turtles are brought to the centre to be nursed back to health before being released back into the wild.

If history is more your thing, make the short journey to Fort Fleur d’Épée, an 18th-century fortification that was built to help defend the island against English attacks. The historic monument sits atop Bas-du-Fort and offers magnificent views over the Bay of Gosier. Today the fort is home to a lively cultural scene, with contemporary art exhibitions held here on a regular basis. The vaulted underground passageways, powder magazine and kitchen with furnace are open to the public for exploration.

When you’re ready to eat, you won’t be disappointed. As an Overseas Department of France, Guadeloupe is gaining wider recognition in France and the rest of the world for its nouvelle cuisine Creole, which combines classic French culinary techniques with local ingredients. There are many restaurants to suit all budgets in Le Gosier and the surrounding area for sit-down meals, but if you fancy sampling the local fare in a more informal setting, be sure to visit Le Gosier night market. Held on Friday evenings, the market offers the chance to buy local products and souvenirs, infused rums, and delicious street food, all to the sound of live Creole music.

I wish I knew to bring a few folders to accommodate all the papers, etc we would get every day! I also loved the fact we got homework, and the super-intensive personal course was designed to fit my needs exactly. well done!

I stayed at the Adolphe, and couldn't be happier. the adolphe family were available to us if we needed anything, and bent over backwards to invite us to activities, the beach, etc. they sure didn't have to do that, so that was beyond nice! they are next to the nicest hotel in town, the auberge to vielle tour, and we were able to use the hotel's beach with our own key! sweet! it was a ten-minute walk from the adolphe to st louis catholic church, and then another five minute walk to class. Perfect!

The course I attended was really well organized. High competence of the professor, who took care of each students necessity for further explanations concerning all aspects of the language (grammar, pronunciation, etc). In only two weeks I could notice a great improvement of my skill. My accommodation has been great. the house was nice, comfortable and big but the most important was the family. They really help every student to improve the Language. The house is plenty of books, which are at the students disposal to learn all about the history, culture, geography of Guadeloupe.

Become a Pirate of the Caribbean in Guadeloupe!

The first thing that hit me when I went to Guadeloupe was the heat! Stepping off the plane, and walking down the tunnel to the terminal my first thought was that someone had left the heating on. Then I saw that the windows were open and realised that this was how it was going to be for the duration of my stay and I had better get used to it! To be honest, after a couple of days I did start to get used to it and it wasn't a problem at all (in fact, it made a pleasant change to life in the cold and grey UK!). My bedroom had a fan to keep me cool at night, there is always the possibility of swimming in the clear blue sea. What's more, the numerous bars along the beach mean that there is no shortage of ice cold drinks. Read more...
