Sorrento – All that Italy has to offer, in a little town!
I admit it! I’m a bit in love with Italy, with the food, the art, the people, the landscape… Italy has everything!
I had already seen the most famous places, like Rome, Florence and Milan, and I wanted to try somewhere different for my next holiday. I wanted to see a bit more of the real Italy! That’s when I came across Sorrento.
I was looking for somewhere by the sea that was not too big, so that I could relax and have more direct contact with the locals. Sorrento seemed to offer all of this, but what I didn’t expect was that it had so much more to offer! It turned out to be an excellent choice for a language course!
I flew to Naples airport and decided to have an airport transfer (organized by the school) to Sorrento. Here the first surprise arrived, a very elegantly dressed person welcomed me and took me to Sorrento in an extremely nice car. Definitely money well invested!
The journey from the airport to Sorrento takes you all through the Gulf of Napoli, which is a must-see! You get to see the nice beaches, the locals with their scooters, enjoy the refreshing sea-breezes…in 20 minutes I had already forgotten about any worries and just wanted to start discovering all the spots I was watching.
Sorrento is a lovely town which is very popular with Italians, especially during the summer season! The town is beautiful, with charming streets full of restaurants and cafes. What’s more, from Sorrento you can explore some of the best places in Italy. I saw Pompeii and its remains, the Island of Capri, all the Amalfi coast, Naples… and I only had one week!!!
My favourite place of all was Positano, a hidden village by the sea, with cute narrow streets heading to a beautiful little beach (see the second picture). It’s very easy to get to Positano from Sorrento. You just need to go to the central bus station and get a ticket. There are several buses that go to Positano every day.
Here’s my suggestion for what to do in Sorrento at night. You must try this! Go to the Hotel Imperial Tramontano’s gardens. There is a piano player who sings the most romantic Italian songs you can imagine. The views from these gardens is absolutely breathtaking, and the view of the Naples bay at night is something I’ll never forget!
These are only a few of the things that you can do in Sorrento. What did you like the most?
Jordi
N.B. Don’t forget to try the ‘Limoncello’, the famous drink made of lemons, which is originally from Sorrento!

What is it like living with a HOST family?
Hi Johnette,
I would always recommend staying with a host family. In my opinion, this is the best way to learn the langage as meal times are the perfect opportunity to sit down with the family and put your language skills into practice! Not only that, but it is an excellent way to experience the real way of life!
Not all the families are ‘traditional’ families (mother, father with children). Many are older couples or even single people whose own children have now ‘flown the nest’ and this is why they have a room free to accommodate students.
However, one thing they all share in common is that they enjoy looking after students and are keen to help you learn the language – this is most important!
I have no doubt that you would find living with a family both enjoyable and hugely beneficial!
I hope that I have answered your question.
Bye for now!
Scott
