Five weeks of fun and Spanish in Playa del Carmen
I ended up spending 5 fantastic weeks in Playa del Carmen, Mexico this summer after I graduated University and it was the perfect laid back atmosphere to practice my Spanish in.
Playa has something for everyone; less fast paced than Cancun, but still offers enough clubs, restaurants and shopping for those who can’t live without their creature comforts, not to mention turquoise water and white sandy beaches just a stone’s throw away from the school!
Although I thought that 5 weeks was a pretty long time to stay in a town on the coast, there was always an excursion offered by the school to see the outlying area and Mayan ruins to change things up on the weekends. During the week, I really enjoyed the cooking classes and although I was a bit too chicken to do it, some students went on scuba diving expeditions that the school helped them organize.
After having studied Spanish at University for 3 years, I was a bit curious to see if the school could offer me a suitable course. Not only were there other advanced students of a similar level to myself, but when I did feel like I needed more of a challenge, the school offered me private tuition instead! of group lessons. I am really happy with my progress over the six weeks.
The school had a great atmosphere; both the staff and the other students were a lot of fun. With tonnes of people from all over the world staying there, it was easy to make friends while sitting by the pool, lounging on the hammocks, or just eating breakfast in the morning.
I am so glad that I picked Playa del Carmen for my five weeks of fun in the sun!

The most beautiful beaches in the world!i had such a great time,i can’t wait to get back!!What’s better than an ice cold Mojito on the beach??I recomend Playa del Carmen to anyone looking for a once in a lifetime experience.Simply, amazing!!
Mexico, here i come!!it sounds so great!!I’ve been planing to go to mexico for a long time now. That would be by the end of March/April…i heard it was the best time to be there.I want to enjoy the sunny days as much as possible..can you please tell me when is the best time for that?thanks!
End of March should be just fine Christophe.
You’ll love it!
I went to Playa Del Carmen last year around the 25th of March and it was the sunniest period in Mexico for the year..I wish i was still there!!Hummmmm Mojitos and Taco dips!!!!
I lived in Mexico for a year and I can assure you that it was the best time of my life!! Playa del Carmen and Yucatan in general are fantastic places to visit and people there are so friendly!! I would also recommend more authentic places like Chipas and Oaxaca but also Guadalajara where I lived! Just imagine yourself in a sunny country eating plenty of tasty tacos with a Corona beer (or Sol or Bohemia, etc.)…paradise I call it!
Oh my god!! The picture of that beach looks amazing!!! cooking classes, scuba diving, delicious food… everything sounds absolutely perfect! But isn´t it tempting to skip classes when you´re in such a surrounding? I mean sitting at the pool or beach, relaxing in hammocks sounds a bit more tempting than sitting in a classroom…
